About The Position
The Senior Software Engineer will join Mozilla’s geographically distributed Firefox Platform Layout/APZ team, which develops browser functionality related to panning, scrolling, zoom, page layout, CSS, images, text, printing, and animations in Gecko, the engine behind Firefox. The role has a particular focus on Asynchronous Pan and Zoom (APZ), technology that helps make user interaction responsive and enjoyable. The engineer will design and develop standards-compliant CSS and page-layout features used by Firefox users and contribute to code for Firefox across Android, Windows, Linux, and macOS. The team works virtually and in the open, with an emphasis on fast, lightweight, maintainable code and rendering quality and performance.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Computer Science or a similar field.
- Experience developing C/C++ and/or Rust applications.
- Strong debugging and optimization skills in a multi-threaded environment.
- Experience with memory and performance optimization tools.
- A proven record of completing projects spanning several months.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to quickly learn and work effectively with a large code base.

- Experience participating in and contributing to open-source projects and/or web browser development.
Responsibilities
- Work cooperatively with other Mozillians to identify and correct issues, and ask for help as needed.
- Write high-quality, performant, open-source, standards-compliant code.
- Develop innovative layout, graphics, and user-interaction techniques, algorithms, and tools to maximize Firefox rendering quality and performance.
- Participate in regular code reviews, team meetings, and long-term planning.
- Help triage and test bugs, investigate root causes, and explore potential solutions.
