About The Position

D.R. Horton, Inc. is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to design, develop, enhance, and support scalable backend applications, APIs, and distributed services that power business-critical systems. The role partners with product managers, architects, and cross-functional engineering teams to deliver secure, reliable, high-performing solutions. This is an in-person position in the company’s Arlington, Texas office. The engineer will build and operate high-throughput, low-latency services; develop RESTful APIs and GraphQL services; evolve event-driven systems; and manage cloud-hosted environments and CI/CD pipelines. The role also includes making architectural decisions, leading design and code reviews, improving system quality and reducing technical debt, resolving production incidents, and mentoring engineers. The position requires a bachelor’s degree or equivalent education and experience, along with 5–8 years of professional backend software development experience.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Mathematics, or equivalent education and experience.
5–8 years of professional experience developing backend software applications in an enterprise environment.
Expert-level proficiency in one or more core languages: JavaScript (preferred), Java, or Python, with meaningful production experience in at least one.
Hands-on experience with message queuing and event streaming platforms.
Demonstrated ability to design and deliver production-grade RESTful APIs and GraphQL services, including schema design, pagination, error handling, and API versioning.
Experience writing unit, integration, and contract tests using frameworks such as JUnit, pytest, Jest, or equivalent.
Ability to understand and carry out instructions provided in written or oral form or through DRH applications.
Ability to sit for the majority of an 8-hour workday; use hands and fingers to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk; and hear.
Specific vision abilities required include close vision and peripheral vision.

Nice To Haves

Strong command of distributed systems fundamentals, including consistency models, partition tolerance, idempotency, backpressure, and observability.
Track record of delivering large, ambiguous projects with measurable business and technical impact.

Responsibilities

Design, build, and operate high-throughput, low-latency backend services and APIs for distributed environments.
Author and maintain RESTful APIs with OpenAPI/Swagger documentation and GraphQL services, emphasizing schema design, versioning, and performance.
Architect and evolve event-driven systems using queueing and streaming technologies, supporting reliable message delivery, exactly-once semantics, and graceful failure handling.
Develop and maintain unit, integration, and contract tests to meet coverage targets, reduce escaped defects, and support reliable production releases.
Manage cloud-hosted environments, including networking, containerization, autoscaling, and cost optimization.
Build, maintain, and improve CI/CD pipelines with quality gates that accelerate delivery and reduce deployment risk.
Make architectural decisions, clearly communicating trade-offs to peers and leadership.
Lead technical design reviews and code reviews, maintaining standards for correctness, performance, testability, and maintainability.
Identify and systematically eliminate technical debt to improve velocity and reduce operational burden.
Collaborate with Product to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
Debug and resolve production incidents, and contribute to blameless postmortems and lasting remediation.
Mentor and sponsor junior and mid-level engineers through pairing, feedback, and knowledge sharing.
Conduct business professionally and ethically to serve customers and support company goodwill and profit.
