About The Position

D.R. Horton, Inc. is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to design, develop, enhance, and support scalable backend applications, APIs, and distributed services that power business-critical systems. The role partners with product managers, architects, and cross-functional engineering teams to deliver secure, reliable, and high-performing solutions. This is an in-person position in the Arlington, Texas office. The engineer designs and operates high-throughput, low-latency backend services; develops RESTful APIs and GraphQL services; builds event-driven systems; manages cloud-hosted environments; and improves testing and CI/CD practices. The role also involves architectural decision-making, design and code reviews, technical-debt reduction, production incident response, and mentoring junior and mid-level engineers.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Mathematics, or equivalent education and experience.
5–8 years of professional experience developing backend software applications in an enterprise environment.
Expert-level proficiency in one or more core languages: JavaScript (preferred), Java, or Python, with meaningful production experience in at least one.
Deep hands-on experience with message queuing and event streaming platforms.
Demonstrated ability to design and deliver production-grade RESTful APIs and GraphQL services, including schema design, pagination, error handling, and API versioning.
Experience writing meaningful unit, integration, and contract tests using JUnit, pytest, Jest, or equivalent.
Ability to understand and carry out instructions provided in written or oral form or through DRH applications.
Ability to sit for the majority of an 8-hour workday; use hands and fingers to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear.
Close and peripheral vision abilities are required.

Nice To Haves

Strong command of distributed systems fundamentals, including consistency models, partition tolerance, idempotency, backpressure, and observability.
Track record of shipping large, ambiguous projects with measurable business and technical impact.

Responsibilities

Design, build, and operate high-throughput, low-latency backend services and APIs for distributed environments.
Author and maintain RESTful APIs with OpenAPI/Swagger documentation and GraphQL services, including schema design, versioning, and performance.
Architect and evolve event-driven systems using queueing and streaming technologies, with reliable message delivery, exactly-once semantics, and graceful failure handling.
Develop and maintain unit, integration, and contract tests to meet coverage targets, reduce escaped defects, and support reliable production releases.
Manage cloud-hosted environments, including networking, containerization, autoscaling, and cost optimization.
Build, maintain, and improve CI/CD pipelines that enforce quality gates and reduce production deployment risk.
Make architectural decisions that balance pragmatism with long-term system health, and communicate trade-offs to peers and leadership.
Lead technical design and code reviews, promoting correctness, performance, testability, and maintainability.
Identify and eliminate technical debt to improve velocity and reduce operational burden.
Collaborate with Product to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
Debug and resolve production incidents, contribute to blameless postmortems, and implement durable remediation.
Mentor and sponsor junior and mid-level engineers through pairing, feedback, and knowledge sharing.
Conduct business professionally and ethically to serve customers and support company goodwill and profit.
