About The Position

Wing is seeking a Backend Senior Software Engineer to join its Uncrewed Air Traffic Management (UTM) engineering team in Palo Alto, California. The role contributes to building and scaling systems that enable safe and efficient drone operations worldwide. The UTM team develops regulatory-compliant systems that scale with Wing's operations, including regulatory and compliance software, shared airspace infrastructure, and a reliable, scalable platform. Projects include backend services for shared airspace operations, geospatial data ingestion, and serving data to field user interfaces. The successful candidate will work in a dynamic, collaborative environment, identify areas requiring investment, set solution strategy, influence team direction, and make technical contributions to complex systems amid ambiguity. The role involves cross-functional collaboration and participation in an on-call rotation or other escalations.

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and experience working in a collaborative team.
  • Ability to identify challenging problems and potential solutions with limited guidance, then launch and successfully deliver the solution.
  • Experience developing backend systems involving database schema design and synchronous/asynchronous systems.
  • Experience developing in C++, or ability to quickly learn C++ with experience in similar languages such as Java or Go.

Responsibilities

  • Set solution and/or architectural strategy for yourself or a limited number of peers, resolve ambiguity, and anticipate complicating factors.
  • Design and build solutions using asynchronous pipelines, database systems, and RPC handlers in collaboration with frontend and backend engineers, in a privacy- and security-conscious ecosystem.
  • Investigate and build software in areas with limited expertise and make an immediate impact.
  • Collaborate with industry partners, product managers, and program managers to design, implement, and quickly launch features for partners and end consumers on time.
  • Mitigate, identify root causes of, and resolve urgent issues in familiar and unfamiliar software as part of an on-call rotation or other escalations.
  • Contribute to a supportive, engaged, quality-focused team culture that enables Wing to scale.
