About The Position

WGU is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join its Student Lifecycle Services engineering team and work on an enterprise Salesforce platform supporting the student journey from enrollment through graduation. The platform includes more than 300 flows and 2,000 Apex classes, integrates with Banner (SIS), ServiceNow, Kafka, and other university systems, and serves thousands of internal users daily. The engineer will build and maintain the automation, integrations, and platform capabilities that support more than 150,000 students. The role involves setting architecture and technical direction across the Salesforce portfolio, leading complex cross-system designs, resolving difficult platform issues, mentoring engineers, reducing technical debt, and partnering with engineering leadership on platform strategy and governance. The team uses Copado for CI/CD, a trigger framework, structured deployment pipelines, and Agile (Scrum), and collaborates with Product, Marketing, Operations, Enrollment, and Student Services stakeholders. This is a full-time, regular, in-office position requiring five days per week in Salt Lake City. The role is classified as 40 standard weekly hours and is eligible for bonuses and the benefits described in the posting.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • Experience designing multi-system integrations, including approaches to error handling and data reconciliation.
  • Mastery of asynchronous Apex patterns, including selecting among Batch, Queueable, Platform Events, and CDC based on the problem.
  • Deep understanding of Salesforce order of execution and its impact on complex automation.
  • A track record of solving problems that span multiple systems and were difficult for others to resolve.
  • Experience mentoring engineers and elevating team capability.
  • Ability to communicate technical architecture to engineers and non-technical leadership.
  • Experience designing and managing CI/CD pipelines using Copado or an equivalent.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in higher education technology, including SIS integrations or FERPA-aware systems.
  • Experience with large-scale Salesforce orgs, including complex sharing models, 100+ objects, or 300+ automation components.
  • Experience migrating legacy automation from Process Builder or Workflow Rules to Flow or Apex.

Responsibilities

  • Design systems that span Salesforce capabilities and external systems, selecting and coordinating Platform Events, CDC, asynchronous Apex, and integration callouts as appropriate.
  • Make architectural decisions for the Salesforce portfolio and ensure team solutions fit the broader platform.
  • Lead technical design for complex features spanning Salesforce, Banner, ServiceNow, and Kafka.
  • Solve complex platform problems involving transaction boundaries, asynchronous handoffs, and Salesforce order of execution.
  • Mentor SE I and SE II engineers through design guidance, architecture reviews, and pairing on complex problems.
  • Drive technical direction for Salesforce development practices, including asynchronous patterns, integration standards, and testing strategy.
  • Identify, prioritize, and reduce technical debt by building the case for changes and executing the plan.
  • Partner with engineering leadership on platform strategy, migration plans, org health, and governance limit forecasting.
  • Represent technical architecture and perspectives to non-technical stakeholders, including Product, Operations, and Academic leadership.
