About The Position

Apple’s Information Systems and Technology (IS&T) organization builds and operates technology systems supporting Apple’s customers and employees, including services for 2.5 billion active Apple devices and billions of secure transactions. The Finance Engineering team builds the distributed platform that moves, routes, and settles money across Apple’s global ecosystem, turning high-volume business transactions into compliant, auditable, and immutable financial flows.

In this senior backend engineering role, you will design mission-critical distributed services for high-throughput payment rails, immutable sub-ledgers, transactional state machines, and end-to-end verification harnesses. You will partner with Platform Architects, Finance, Controllership, and Accounting. The systems handle real money at massive scale, requiring idempotency, zero-loss architecture, and continuous auditability.

Requirements

• At least 6 years of experience building production applications in the Java ecosystem with the Spring ecosystem, including Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Spring Security, Spring Data, or Spring Cloud.
• Mastery of Spring dependency injection, auto-configuration, reactive programming with WebFlux, and Spring-based microservice design patterns.
• At least 6 years of experience designing, implementing, and shipping high-scale, high-performance, highly available, fault-tolerant, and secure cloud-based distributed systems.
• At least 6 years of experience in API design and implementation, including RESTful APIs, gRPC, GraphQL, contract-first design such as OpenAPI/Swagger or Protobuf, API versioning, gateway patterns, rate limiting, backward compatibility, and long-term API evolution.
• At least 6 years of experience with message-driven and event-driven architectures, including messaging systems such as Kafka, RabbitMQ, or ActiveMQ, event sourcing, CQRS, and reliable asynchronous communication between distributed services.
• At least 6 years of experience with relational and NoSQL databases, including schema design, query optimization, performance tuning, execution plan analysis, indexing strategy, query rewriting, and database transaction foundations.
• A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent professional work experience.

Nice To Haves

• Track record of leading software projects spanning multiple distributed teams as a tech lead and mentoring senior-level software engineers.
• Hands-on experience using GenAI coding tools such as Claude, Copilot, or Codex to accelerate software development, improve code quality, and streamline debugging and testing.
• Experience with search and indexing technologies such as Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, or Solr, including search architecture, index optimization, query tuning, and full-text search for large-scale datasets.
• Expert-level understanding of advanced JVM internals, including garbage collection, memory allocation, JIT, and JNI.
