Staff Software Engineer, Finance Engineering

Anthropic•Seattle, WA
•$320,000 - $405,000•Hybrid

About The Position

Anthropic is hiring a Staff Software Engineer for Finance Engineering to build the platform that ensures company revenue and compute spending are accurately recorded as Claude usage and business complexity grow. The platform will bring finance events from company systems and partners—including usage and billing, compute, infrastructure assets, and leases—into an append-only ledger and accounting engine. Its goals include continuous close with zero material issues, audit-grade controls, correctness to the cent, reliable replay, and the ability to explain balances as of any date. Claude agents will use the same APIs and controls as people. The engineer will shape the platform’s architecture and work with engineers in Billing, Compute, and Infra on shared contracts and APIs, as well as with product owners, finance operations, and internal audit to translate accounting and control requirements into technical designs. A finance background is not required; the company will teach the domain to engineers with relevant backend systems experience. The role includes building and operating production services used by other engineering teams, with reliability targets for uptime, latency, throughput, and correctness. The position is hybrid: staff are currently expected to work from an office at least 25% of the time, though some roles may require more. Anthropic is headquartered in San Francisco and offers competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and office space for collaboration.

Requirements

  • Strong backend engineering experience in a statically typed language such as Go, Java, or Rust, or Python at scale.
  • Experience designing and operating high-volume, event-driven systems, including publish/subscribe or streaming systems, with idempotent processing, replay, and backfill.
  • Experience designing relational data models and writing SQL for complex, versioned data.
  • Experience designing APIs, SDKs, and service-to-service integrations used by other teams.
  • Experience building systems with auditability, access control, or compliance requirements.
  • Experience translating requirements from non-engineering partners into technical designs.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write design documents.
  • At least a bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience; field of study must be relevant to the role as demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience.
  • Minimum years of experience correlate with the internal job level requirements for the position.

Nice To Haves

  • 10 or more years of experience.
  • Experience building developer platforms or paved paths.
  • Experience with streaming systems such as Pub/Sub or Kafka.
  • Experience building with LLMs and agents, including MCP.
  • Experience building a ledger, sub-ledger, billing, or payments system.
  • Familiarity with accounting concepts such as double-entry accounting and journal entries.
  • Familiarity with internal controls and audit concepts such as audit trails, segregation of duties, and change management.
  • Exposure to ERP or financial systems such as Workday Financials.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build the governed front door into finance, including APIs for applications and agents, an event bus, adapters for vendor applications and reports, data-quality gates, and processing with exactly-once posting, replay, and backfill.
  • Drive development of the accounting ledger and engine, including an append-only ledger with idempotent posting, a rules framework that converts business events into journal entries, ERP translation, and period locks.
  • Design and build SDKs and frameworks for finance applications and agents.
  • Implement platform controls as code, including an immutable audit trail, maker-checker controls, scoped access, and segregation of duties.
  • Build and operate production services called by other engineering teams in real time, such as tax and collections services in the billing flow, and own agreed uptime, latency, throughput, and correctness targets.
  • Shape the platform’s technical direction through architecture, engineering standards, and design reviews.
  • Work with engineering teams, product owners, finance operations, and internal audit to establish shared contracts and APIs and translate requirements into designs.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation and benefits.
  • Optional equity donation matching.
  • Generous vacation and parental leave.
  • Flexible working hours.
  • Office space for collaboration.
