Staff Software Engineer, Finance Engineering

About The Position

Anthropic is hiring a Staff Software Engineer for its Finance Engineering team to build the platform that records company revenue and spending accurately as Claude usage grows. The platform will provide a governed entry point for finance events, an append-only ledger, and an accounting engine that posts each event exactly once. It must support replay, backfill, audit-grade controls, and explanations of financial figures as of any date, while handling high volume with a very high correctness bar. The engineer will shape the platform’s architecture and build services and APIs used by both people and Claude agents. They will partner with engineering teams in Billing, Compute, and Infrastructure on shared contracts and APIs, and work with product owners, finance operations, and internal audit to translate accounting and controls requirements into technical designs. A finance background is not required; the company will teach the domain to engineers with relevant backend systems experience.

Requirements

  • Strong backend engineering experience in a statically typed language such as Go, Java, or Rust, or experience using Python at scale.
  • Experience designing and operating high-volume, event-driven systems with idempotent processing, replay, and backfill.
  • Experience designing relational data models and writing SQL for complex, versioned data.
  • Experience designing APIs, SDKs, and service-to-service integrations used by other teams.
  • Experience building systems with auditability, access control, or compliance requirements.
  • Experience translating requirements from non-engineering partners into technical designs.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including writing design documents.
  • A bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
  • A field of study relevant to the role, demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience.

Nice To Haves

  • 10 or more years of experience.
  • Experience building developer platforms or paved paths.
  • Experience with streaming systems such as Pub/Sub or Kafka.
  • Experience building with LLMs and agents, including MCP.
  • Experience building a ledger, sub-ledger, billing, or payments system.
  • Familiarity with accounting concepts such as double-entry accounting and journal entries.
  • Familiarity with internal controls and audit concepts such as audit trails, segregation of duties, and change management.
  • Exposure to ERP or financial systems such as Workday Financials.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build the governed front door for finance events, including APIs for apps and agents, an event bus, vendor-app and report adapters, data-quality gates, and processing that posts each event exactly once with replay and backfill.
  • Drive development of the accounting ledger and engine, including an append-only ledger with idempotent posting, a rules framework that turns business events into journal entries, ERP translation, and period locks.
  • Design and build SDKs and frameworks for finance applications and agents.
  • Implement platform controls as code, including an immutable audit trail, maker-checker workflows, scoped access, and segregation of duties.
  • Build and operate production services used by other engineering teams in real time, including tax and collections services in the billing flow, and own agreed uptime, latency, throughput, and correctness targets.
  • Shape the platform’s technical direction through architecture, engineering standards, and design reviews.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation and benefits.
  • Optional equity donation matching.
  • Generous vacation and parental leave.
  • Flexible working hours.
  • Office space for collaborating with colleagues.
  • Visa sponsorship, with reasonable efforts to secure a visa for candidates receiving an offer.
