About The Position

As a Senior Software Engineer on the Accounts team, you will help build and maintain the performant, resilient, accurate software platform that supports player registration and authentication, identity verification (KYC), fraud and AML checks, geolocation compliance, responsible gaming and regulatory enforcement, and player communications. The systems are business-critical and support players and stakeholders across PENN’s digital gaming and entertainment business, with a strong focus on reliability, security, performance, and regulatory obligations. You will design, scale, and tune REST APIs, low-latency gRPC services, and SQL queries; own high-scope technical problems; and deliver features end-to-end in a collaborative agile/scrum environment. The role also involves improving production scalability, configuring Datadog monitoring and alerts, mentoring engineers, and working across business domains and with internal, third-party, legacy, and modern systems. This can include data migrations, data translation, and supporting infrastructure. The position requires experience operating production services and building secure, auditable authentication, identity, or other regulated systems.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of software engineering experience.
  • Strong computer science foundation, including data structures, distributed systems, algorithms, and software design.
  • Experience with production systems at scale and identifying improvements through load testing and tracing.
  • Experience investigating and remediating production performance regressions, including CPU, I/O, memory, and latency issues in high-throughput services.
  • Experience with on-call rotations for production services and owning release cycles end-to-end.
  • Passion for clean code architecture and software craftsmanship.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience authoring technical specifications, runbooks, and cross-team design documents.
  • Experience with modern web frameworks and API development, such as Phoenix, Ruby on Rails, FastAPI, Laravel, or Node.
  • Strong knowledge of relational databases, including PostgreSQL and MySQL, and relational database theory such as normalization and denormalization.
  • Experience with Kubernetes and operating services in a containerized environment.
  • Comfort working in a terminal, with Git and GitHub or similar tools, and in an editor of choice.
  • Experience with testing frameworks such as ExUnit, RSpec, Jest, pytest, or equivalent.
  • Experience with background job processing such as Oban, Exq, Sidekiq, Celery, or Beanstalkd.
  • Experience with asynchronous event-handling infrastructure such as Apache Kafka, RabbitMQ, AWS SQS/SNS, or Google Cloud Pub/Sub.
  • Experience building authentication, identity, or other regulated systems with strong security and auditability.
  • Strong understanding of authentication and authorization standards including OAuth 2.0, OIDC, JWT, and MFA, and secure handling of PII.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with agentic software development tools, building and using agentic workflows, and validating the quality of agentic outputs.
  • Experience integrating third-party KYC, fraud, geolocation, or messaging providers, including push, email, or SMS.
  • Experience building applications in Elixir, hexagonal architecture, or Domain-Driven Design.
  • Contributions to open source software.
  • Experience working at startups.
  • Passion for sports and/or esports.
  • Experience building financial, legal, and/or process accounting systems with strong correctness and auditability.
  • Experience designing and evolving GraphQL schemas for product surfaces used by multiple clients, including iOS, Android, and Web.
  • Experience building and integrating multi-client or white-label platforms, including geo-based routing and per-jurisdiction configuration.
  • Familiarity with gaming regulatory requirements across jurisdictions, such as AGCO and DGE, and responsible gaming controls.

Responsibilities

  • Design, scale, and performance-tune REST APIs, low-latency gRPC services, and SQL queries for player accounts and related systems.
  • Own complex technical problems, draft proposals, and present them to leadership and partner teams for feedback.
  • Design, architect, and deliver new features end-to-end in a collaborative agile/scrum environment.
  • Identify production bottlenecks and risks, and drive changes that make the platform more scalable.
  • Set up and refine Datadog monitoring and alerting for owned systems.
  • Mentor engineers on the team and across teams through specifications, pairing, and code review.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders across business domains to deliver products, operational improvements, and cost-efficiency optimizations.
  • Bridge internal, third-party, legacy, and modern systems, including data migrations, data translation, and development and stewardship of supporting infrastructure.
  • Perform other duties as required.
