Senior Software Engineer, Integrations

Axle Health•Santa Monica, CA
•$170,000 - $200,000

About The Position

Axle Health is hiring a Senior Software Engineer for its Interoperability team, which connects the company's AI-powered scheduling and workforce management platform with systems used by home health organizations, particularly EHRs and EMRs. The role owns integrations end to end, including systems with inconsistent APIs and limited documentation, from initial design and customer conversations through launch and production support. This is a hands-on individual-contributor position on a small team. The engineer independently scopes projects, makes technical decisions, investigates customer-reported issues across Axle Health's systems and external systems, coordinates with vendors and partners, and keeps customers and internal teams informed. The role also involves building reliable backend services for high-volume patient data, with attention to integrity, security, uptime, monitoring, resilience, code quality, and documentation.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of professional software engineering experience, including end-to-end ownership of integrations with external or legacy systems from development through production support.
  • Track record of autonomously owning projects, including scoping work, making technical decisions, and driving projects to completion without step-by-step direction.
  • Comfort investigating customer-reported issues directly and explaining the problem, plan, and progress to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to architect scalable, performant, and secure systems.
  • Experience at a fast-paced startup or growth-stage company.
  • Bachelor's degree.

Nice To Haves

  • Backend expertise in Node.js and TypeScript, with 1–2 or more years of experience, and hands-on experience designing and working with SQL databases; PostgreSQL is preferred.
  • Experience with EHRs or EMRs and healthcare interoperability standards such as FHIR and HL7.
  • Integration experience in logistics, field services, or another operations-heavy domain, such as EDI, ERP, WMS, or POS systems.
  • Background in a domain where data integrity and security are non-negotiable.
  • Experience building monitoring and alerting for systems with significant data volume or uptime requirements.
  • Working knowledge of CI/CD, DevOps practices, and build systems.
  • Familiarity with Axle Health's technology stack: ExpressJS, GraphQL, React, React Native, PostgreSQL, AWS, and Datadog.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build integrations between Axle Health's platform and EHR and EMR systems, including older systems with inconsistent APIs and limited documentation.
  • Scope integration projects, make technical decisions, and own delivery from the first conversation through launch and ongoing production support.
  • Investigate customer-reported issues, identify root causes across Axle Health's systems and external systems, and execute resolution plans while informing customers and account teams.
  • Coordinate directly with EHR vendors' and partners' technical teams to resolve documentation gaps and make integrations work as intended.
  • Sequence integration work, set realistic milestones, and communicate progress and risks to Engineering, Professional Services, and Product Management.
  • Build backend services that process data for hundreds of thousands of patients, emphasizing data integrity, security, and uptime.
  • Build monitoring and failure handling for unpredictable external systems so issues surface before customers notice them.
  • Contribute to code reviews and write clear documentation to share integration knowledge across the team.

  • Competitive salary and equity.
  • Equity compensation for all employees.
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • 401(k) plan.
