About The Position

Microsoft Silicon, Cloud, Hardware, and Infrastructure Engineering (SCHIE) develops core infrastructure and foundational technologies supporting Microsoft’s online services and Azure platform. The DPU team combines software and hardware expertise to build programmable, high-performance chips for processing large data volumes. As a Senior Software Engineer on the DPU Integrations and Operational Excellence team, you will design, build, test, and deploy automation tools and agents for control-plane and data-plane software running on custom DPU silicon across platforms for Azure compute and networking. The role involves learning DPU architecture and end-to-end customer workflows, troubleshooting field issues, managing incidents, maintaining case and KPI dashboards, tracking software and firmware releases and their fixes, and collaborating across teams to resolve problems. You will also provide technical leadership for testing and quality, and help improve engineering development and testing through lessons learned from field issues. The position includes on-call responsibilities as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI).

Requirements

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements, including passing the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire or transfer and every two years thereafter.

Nice To Haves

  • 6+ years of experience developing, testing, diagnosing, and troubleshooting networking, storage, or compute cloud platforms as a lead engineer owning releases and mentoring or guiding engineers.
  • Experience with Azure or similar large-scale cloud computing infrastructure, control planes, telemetry, monitoring, diagnostics, and reporting.
  • Experience developing and/or testing embedded software for NICs and/or DPUs/IPUs.
  • Understanding and hands-on experience with networking (TCP/IP, RoCEv2, routing/switching), Software Defined Networking, and server platform firmware (BMC, BIOS, etc.) testing.
  • Experience with complex debugging and troubleshooting in both lab and live-site situations.
  • Experience analyzing large-scale data to identify issue themes and root causes.
  • Experience using AI agents for live-site tool automation and analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, test, and deploy integration and diagnostics tools and AI agents to improve release quality and reduce time to mitigate production issues.
  • Provide technical leadership in defining the scope of testing and creating quality plans for DPU-based compute products.
  • Work with stakeholders to create and manage project schedules.
  • Provide technical expertise and oversight to the team, monitor test-plan execution, and ensure testing is efficient and follows plans.
  • Act as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI), follow and develop operational playbooks, and work on call to monitor systems, products, or services for degradation, downtime, or interruptions.
  • Alert stakeholders about status and initiate appropriate actions to restore systems, products, or services.
  • Guide and help debug field issues; collaborate cross-functionally and lead debugging sessions to determine root causes.
  • Maintain dashboards for live and dormant cases and KPIs.
  • Feed lessons learned from field issues back into engineering development and testing processes.
