About The Position

Magic, makers of Loyalist, is hiring a Senior Software Engineer to take ownership of infrastructure and help scale its restaurant-focused operating system. Loyalist ingests live data from roughly 30 third-party systems and manages 40 million guest profiles, hundreds of millions of historical visits and orders, and more than 10 million personalized guest interactions each year. The platform relies on background jobs for data imports, guest-profile synchronization, and email and SMS automations. The role owns AWS infrastructure, including RDS, background jobs, caching, and networking, as well as parts of the integrations layer. Early priorities include improving observability so the team can quickly detect and assess failures, scoping a migration from Celery to a modern background-job orchestrator such as Temporal, and evaluating a purpose-built analytical database to separate reporting workloads from live operational data. The engineer will also work on new integrations, sometimes with partner companies, speak with customers about integration needs and issues, and partner closely with Niky and the product team. Magic is a 20-person company based in SoHo, with a team of five engineers. The role is in-office five days a week. Team practices include completing a stage at a customer restaurant, daily lunch from a different NYC restaurant, and extensive use of AI tools in coding, review, investigation, and planning.

  • Prior ownership of a background job system, including ensuring retries do not cause duplicate actions.
  • Comfort serving as the infrastructure owner on a five-engineer team for the foreseeable future.

Responsibilities

  • Own the company’s AWS infrastructure, including RDS, background jobs, caching, and networking.

  • Improve observability, particularly monitoring and alerting that reveal when data pipelines fail and the severity of failures.
  • Scope and own a migration from Celery to a modern background-job orchestration system such as Temporal.
  • Evaluate and scope a migration of analytical workloads to a purpose-built database.
  • Speak with customers about new integration requests and specific issues, explaining infrastructure implications.
  • Partner closely with Niky and the product team.

  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance for the employee and dependents, with HSA plans available.
