Senior Software Engineer, Virtual Care Platform

Fabric•United States,
•$140,000 - $170,000

About The Position

The Senior Software Engineer on the Virtual Care Platform serves as a strategic owner of production reliability and patient experience. The role provides the first engineering response to production and support issues during business hours, prioritizes incidents by patient impact, and diagnoses and resolves problems across a large Python/Django monolith and its supporting microservices. Work includes careful live production data corrections in HIPAA-regulated systems spanning revenue cycle management, eligibility and coverage, clinical integrations, and internal administration tools. The engineer also improves the admin portal, builds diagnostic tools and self-service capabilities for Support, Clinical Operations, and Implementations, and turns recurring incidents into permanent product fixes. The role leads a Kafka-based Event Bus initiative using AWS MSK, CloudEvents, and Python, including defining event contracts and driving platform adoption. AI coding and diagnostic tools are used to accelerate analysis, safe data corrections, documentation, and code review.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of professional software engineering experience, operating at a senior level and owning production systems end to end.
  • Deep, hands-on Python and Django expertise, including experience navigating and editing a large, mature codebase with Django REST Framework APIs, Celery task processing, complex ORM queries, and multiple databases.
  • Proven debugging and production troubleshooting skills, including composure when incidents actively affect patients.
  • Experience with relational databases such as MySQL and/or PostgreSQL, including writing and optimizing queries and understanding multi-database routing.
  • Experience operating production SaaS, ideally multi-tenant, with sound reliability and safe operational practices.
  • Clear written communication skills for documentation and runbooks, and ability to collaborate across Support, Clinical Operations, Implementations, and Engineering.
  • Ability to work as a self-directed, solo domain owner, set priorities amid competing urgency, and make sound decisions.
  • Proficiency using AI development tools to optimize queries, write boilerplate code, and assist with rapid incident response.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience building software in healthcare or another high-stakes, regulated, or safety-critical domain, especially involving PHI in a HIPAA environment.
  • Experience with Apache Kafka, AWS MSK, or event-driven architectures, including event schema design, consumer groups, and reliable eventing pipelines.
  • Familiarity with healthcare billing and revenue cycle management concepts, including claims, eligibility verification, coverage logic, and invoice transmission.
  • Experience with HL7 or FHIR interoperability standards, or health information exchange platforms such as Particle Health.
  • Production experience with ElasticSearch, Redis, RabbitMQ, or Celery.
  • Experience with e-prescribing systems such as SureScripts, lab integrations such as Quest, or pharmacy workflows.
  • TypeScript experience or willingness to learn it; the team maintains a TypeScript microservice using Hono, Bun, and PostgreSQL, deployed on Kubernetes with Helm/Argo Rollouts, and contributions are expected.
  • Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, AWS infrastructure such as S3, Secrets Manager, and IAM, and CI/CD pipelines such as GitHub Actions.
  • Prior experience in production support, sustaining, or reliability-focused engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the first line of engineering response for incoming production and support issues during business hours, triaging promptly and shielding the core product team from interruptions.
  • Prioritize incidents according to patient impact, treating disruptions to care, prescriptions, and claims as critical.
  • Diagnose and fix bugs across the Django codebase and associated services, addressing both immediate issues and root causes.
  • Make careful live production data edits to resolve urgent billing, coverage, eligibility, and invoice transmission issues while maintaining safe practices for HIPAA-regulated systems.
  • Own and improve the admin portal and internal tools so Support, Clinical Operations, and Implementations can manage scheduling, eligibility debugging, and billing workflows independently.
  • Create documentation, runbooks, and diagnostic tools that help Support resolve common issues independently, using generative AI to draft technical materials and troubleshooting guides.
  • Collaborate with Support, Clinical Operations, Implementations, and Engineering to turn recurring incidents into permanent fixes.
  • Identify patterns in incoming issues, particularly involving enterprise eligibility, coverage accuracy, billing transmission, and clinical integration errors, and feed them back into the product.
  • Monitor operational health metrics, including appointment coverage, invoice transmission, visit price accuracy, lab processing, and e-prescribing error channels.
  • Lead the Event Bus initiative to build a Kafka-based AWS MSK eventing backbone using CloudEvents and Python.
  • Integrate the Event Bus library into the platform, define event contracts, and drive adoption across teams.
  • Use AI coding tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or Claude to accelerate root-cause analysis, safe data corrections, and code review.
