Senior Software Engineer, Compute Service

Snowflake•Menlo Park, CA
•$200,000 - $287,500

About The Position

The Compute Service team builds and operates systems that schedule and run warehouse-backed work beyond interactive queries, including asynchronous and scheduled compute, elastic capacity for parts of live queries, and the scheduling control plane. The team balances usability, performance, cost, and reliability for the teams and customers who depend on this compute. This role will help shape the architecture and operation of core services used across Snowflake. The engineer will solve business needs at large scale; design and implement distributed systems for scheduling, queueing, dispatch, and completion of warehouse-backed work; and address fault tolerance, high availability, performance, and scale. The role also builds admission control, isolation, and capacity management to keep shared compute fair and predictable. It involves leading cross-functional initiatives, making trade-offs among consistency, durability, latency, and cost, and ensuring operational readiness and customer commitments for availability and performance.

Requirements

  • Substantial industry experience designing, building, and supporting large-scale systems in production.
  • Experience building large-scale, distributed, fault-tolerant services and control planes, including compute placement, queueing, and monitoring.
  • Strong understanding of operating-system concepts, including multithreading, memory management, networking, storage, performance, and scale.
  • Strong computer-science fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, and distributed systems.
  • Systems programming skills, including multithreading and concurrency.
  • Track record of identifying problems and implementing creative solutions.
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure on AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
  • BS in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Fluency in Java is preferred.
  • An advanced degree is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Solve business needs at large scale through software engineering and analytical problem solving.

  • Analyze and solve fault-tolerance, high-availability, performance, and scale challenges.
  • Build admission control, isolation, and capacity management to keep shared compute fair and predictable.
  • Lead cross-functional initiatives and collaborate with engineers, product managers, and technical program managers across teams.
  • Evaluate trade-offs among consistency, durability, latency, and cost, and build systems that meet the needs of rapidly growing services.
  • Ensure operational readiness of services and meet customer commitments on availability and performance.
