Staff Software Engineer: Compute

Anthropic•San Francisco, CA
•$320,000 - $485,000•Hybrid

About The Position

Anthropic is building software and Claude-powered tools to help scale its compute infrastructure. The role focuses on developing systems for the teams that source datacenter sites, design buildings, procure equipment, and manage construction. The engineer will work closely with these teams to understand their operations and build practical, trusted tools that help bring compute capacity online sooner. The work spans a rapidly growing infrastructure buildout and offers the opportunity to shape how complex datacenter projects are managed.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of experience building software, with strong full-stack skills and a solid grounding in data modeling, APIs, and databases.
  • Experience building software that teams in a physical-world industry depend on, such as datacenters, construction, energy, manufacturing, supply chain, or logistics.
  • Track record of zero-to-one work in startup or startup-like environments.
  • User-centric approach: learn the domain from the people doing the work and validate with them before over-investing.
  • High agency, good judgment about priorities, and strong opinions held loosely.
  • Clear communication across engineering, operations, and research, and care for the societal impacts of the work.
  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
  • Relevant field of study, demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in datacenters at a hyperscaler, colocation provider, operator, utility, or engineering firm, or in adjacent fields such as construction, logistics, or legal.
  • Experience with industry tools such as Procore, Autodesk Construction Cloud, Primavera P6, PLM/BOM, ERP and procurement systems, CAD/BIM, DCIM, or power system studies.
  • Background in electrical, mechanical, or civil engineering, energy systems, or supply chain alongside a software career.
  • Experience building products with large language models.

Responsibilities

  • Build core systems to track datacenter lifecycles, including sites, designs, bills of materials, equipment, and construction progress, in a trusted, permissioned source of truth.
  • Embed with datacenter, energy, and supply chain teams to understand their work, identify critical paths, and build tools they rely on.
  • Migrate and reconcile spreadsheets and legacy trackers, and integrate with industry construction management, scheduling, and engineering systems.
  • Design fine-grained permissions, auditability, and data quality safeguards for information that informs major investment decisions.
  • Ship early, iterate with users, and prioritize work that helps bring compute online sooner.
  • Partner with research to understand new model capabilities and communicate where they fall short in engineering-heavy, physical-world domains.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation and benefits.
  • Optional equity donation matching.
  • Generous vacation and parental leave.
  • Flexible working hours.
  • Office space for collaboration with colleagues.
