About The Position

Miller is building a cloud software-as-a-service business for the welding and fabrication industry. As one of the first engineers on a small, senior internal team, the Senior Software Engineer will help shape how the company builds, ships, and operates software, including its use of AI-assisted engineering. The role offers the opportunity to deliver software used by customers on shop floors. The Senior Software Engineer owns feature and project delivery across Miller’s cloud SaaS platform, from refining requirements with Product through design, implementation, and production operations. The engineer works with the Software Architect, product leaders, and contract development partners to improve quality and delivery speed, mentor others, and establish modern SaaS engineering practices. The position is remote, with occasional travel to the Appleton, Wisconsin facility.

Requirements

  • At least 4 years of professional software development experience.
  • Hands-on experience building and operating cloud-hosted web applications or services in production; Azure is preferred.
  • Strong proficiency in C#/.NET or a comparable modern language, including REST APIs and relational databases.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and monitoring production systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to own delivery end to end, work through ambiguity, and debug and improve code written by others, including AI-generated and partner code.
  • Professional experience using AI-assisted development tools, with a clear understanding of where they are useful and where they are not.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience at a SaaS product company, including multi-tenant architecture or subscription products.
  • Infrastructure as code experience, such as Bicep or Terraform, and experience with containers such as Docker, Kubernetes, or Azure Container Apps.
  • Experience working with or reviewing work from contract or outsourced development teams.
  • Exposure to SOC 2, ISO 27001, or secure software development practices.
  • IoT, connected equipment, or industrial and manufacturing data experience.
  • Experience with modern front-end frameworks such as React, Angular, or Blazor.
  • Experience building AI- or LLM-powered product features.
  • Agile/Scrum experience and familiarity with delivery metrics such as DORA.
  • Curiosity about welding, fabrication, and the people who do the work.

Responsibilities

  • Own delivery of projects end to end, breaking ambiguous problems into well-defined work and delivering independently.
  • Design and build cloud services, APIs, and web applications on Microsoft Azure using C#/.NET and modern front-end frameworks.
  • Partner with Product to refine requirements and identify simpler alternatives that deliver value faster.
  • Engage with customers, support, and design partners to understand software use and deliver features with telemetry that demonstrates usage and value.
  • Review code and designs from contract development partners and raise quality and velocity concerns using data.
  • Define monitoring, alerting, and runbooks for owned systems; participate in on-call and incident response and contribute to blameless postmortems.
  • Build with infrastructure as code and CI/CD, and apply security and compliance controls such as SOC 2 and ISO 27001 in daily work.
  • Use time-boxed spikes and prototypes to test ideas and decide when to discard prototypes or harden them.
  • Mentor engineers through code review, pairing, and knowledge sharing.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools to accelerate design, coding, testing, and documentation; critically review generated output and follow ITW’s AI usage policy.
  • Keep current with evolving AI tools, understand their trade-offs and risks, and share effective practices with the team.
  • Deliver software enhancements.
  • Review code from external development partners.
  • Improve software development, testing, and deployment processes.
