About The Position

The Staff / Principal Software Engineer will drive the architecture, reliability, and scaling of SingleStore Helios, the company’s managed cloud offering. The role leads the evolution of multi-cloud SaaS control and data planes, manages high-density Kubernetes deployments across major cloud providers, and partners with AI Platform initiatives. It balances greenfield architecture with hands-on systems programming and operational resilience, including allocating approximately 10–20% of working capacity to Tier-3 operational escalations. Final leveling as Staff or Principal will be determined during the interview process based on organizational influence, architectural scope, and system design experience. SingleStore delivers a cloud-native distributed SQL database that unifies transactions and analytics for data-intensive applications. The company is venture-backed, headquartered in San Francisco, and has offices in several locations globally. The role is available in a variety of locations across the United States. Salary varies based on permissible factors including skills, experience, and geographic location; certain roles may also qualify for merit increases and annual bonuses.

Requirements

  • 8–12+ years of professional software engineering experience designing, deploying, and operating distributed enterprise SaaS platforms at scale.
  • Hands-on mastery of Kubernetes internals, CRDs, custom controller development using client-go or controller-runtime, scheduling dynamics, and container networking and runtime internals.
  • Expert proficiency in Go and Python, including concurrent programming, low-latency I/O, and distributed state management.
  • Deep operational understanding of cloud networking constructs such as Transit Gateways, DirectConnect or ExpressRoute, Private Service Connect, CIDR subnetting, mTLS, and load balancing.
  • Practical familiarity with compute, caching, and storage dynamics for real-time AI/ML pipelines, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and vector embeddings.
  • Proven ability to debug complex, non-deterministic production issues across network layers, memory allocations, and distributed consensus.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills, with a track record of driving cross-team alignment and influencing executive-level technical strategy.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience building managed database-as-a-service (DBaaS) or data-intensive streaming infrastructure.
  • Active open-source contributions within the CNCF or cloud-native container ecosystem.
  • Familiarity with Infrastructure-as-Code tools such as Terraform, Pulumi, or Crossplane.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and scale multi-tenant Kubernetes operators, custom controllers, and orchestration workflows that manage thousands of customer database clusters globally.
  • Develop performant, fault-tolerant backend services and control planes using Go and Python.
  • Own cross-cloud networking topology, ingress and egress controls, multi-region routing, VPC peering and PrivateLink topologies, DNS architectures, and service mesh performance across AWS, Azure, and GCP.
  • Collaborate with business units to build scalable compute, vector indexing pipelines, and ingestion infrastructure for real-time GenAI and vector workloads on Helios.
  • Spend approximately 10–20% of working capacity diagnosing complex production issues and serving as the final escalation point for infrastructure failures, performance bottlenecks, and kernel or networking anomalies.
  • Build infrastructure that supports enterprise compliance requirements, with automated controls for SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, HIPAA, and PCI-DSS environments.
  • Author RFCs and architectural design records, mentor senior engineers, lead cross-functional reviews, and partner with Product and SRE teams to align roadmap priorities.
  • Help drive cross-team alignment and influence executive-level technical strategy.

Benefits

  • Certain roles are eligible for merit increases and annual bonuses.
  • The company offers a total compensation and benefits package; specific benefits are not listed.
