About The Position

As a Senior Software Engineer in Coinbase’s Security Platform Engineering group, you will serve as the primary execution anchor for critical regulatory and cryptographic initiatives. The team owns Coinbase’s public and internal certificate management systems, which underpin Coinbase systems. You will lead the development of high-availability services that meet novel certificate needs internally and with external partners. Coinbase is remote-first but not remote-only. Employees are expected to gather quarterly for in-person working sessions called “surges.”

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of software engineering experience, with demonstrated success building highly available distributed systems.
  • Deep expertise in Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) and applied cryptography, including experience operating certificate authorities, automating X.509 certificate lifecycles (issuance, renewal, revocation, and trust-chain distribution), and protecting private key material with HSMs or cloud KMS.
  • Extensive programming experience in systems languages such as Golang, Java, C++, or Rust, and ability to work in a Golang-heavy environment.
  • Proven experience operating Tier-0 or highly critical infrastructure where resilience, security, and low latency are essential.
  • Experience leading technical strategy, architecture, and deliverables for large-scale projects, including navigating complex regulatory requirements and translating them into engineering solutions.
  • Responsible use of generative AI, with human oversight to deliver business-ready outputs and measurable improvements in workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the architecture and execution of critical cryptographic infrastructure.
  • Define multi-quarter technical strategies and clarify highly ambiguous requirements for novel cryptographic solutions.
  • Own ambitious, high-risk initiatives and implement secure, resilient cryptographic protocols in a high-stakes, zero-trust environment.
  • Shape engineering quality practices, mentor within a team of senior engineers, drive rigorous code reviews, and eliminate single points of failure.
  • Build alignment and secure commitment from cross-functional partners across Security, Product, and Policy to drive execution.
