About The Position

The Enterprise Technology Services organization partners across American Express to support company growth and innovation, delivering technology, digital, and data capabilities, platforms, and services globally. The organization is responsible for technology engineering, architecture, and infrastructure, with 24x7 support intended to provide an uninterrupted, high-quality experience for customers and colleagues. It also manages core enterprise platforms and leads technology risk and information security, enterprise data governance and platforms, digital product and design, and enterprise AI platforms. The Senior Software Engineer II leads Java backend engineering teams and technical delivery. The role involves designing scalable, secure, highly available applications, providing architectural and engineering leadership, and owning project delivery from planning through quality assurance. It also focuses on cloud adoption, automation and DevOps, production stability, talent development, engineering metrics, modernization, and long-term technology strategy.

Requirements

Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related engineering discipline.
Minimum 8+ years of experience in software development, with strong expertise in Java backend technologies.
Hands-on experience with Java, Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Hibernate, and microservices architecture.
Strong knowledge of RESTful APIs, distributed systems, and enterprise application development.
Experience with relational and NoSQL databases such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, and MongoDB.
Working knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP), Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pi.

Responsibilities

Lead and manage high-performing Java backend engineering teams, ensuring technical excellence and timely delivery.
Drive the design and development of scalable, secure, and highly available applications using Java, Spring Boot, and microservices.
Provide technical leadership in system architecture, design reviews, technology selection, and engineering best practices.
Own end-to-end project delivery, including planning, execution, resource allocation, risk management, and quality assurance.
Collaborate with Product Managers, Architects, Business Stakeholders, and cross-functional teams to align technology solutions with business objectives.
Drive cloud adoption, CI/CD automation, DevOps practices, and continuous improvement in engineering processes.
Ensure application performance, production stability, security, compliance, and operational excellence.
Mentor and develop engineering talent through coaching, performance management, hiring, and career development.
Define and monitor engineering KPIs, including delivery predictability, code quality, system reliability, and team productivity.
Drive technical innovation, modernization of legacy systems, reduction of technical debt, and long-term technology strategy.
