About The Position

TRM Labs is hiring a Senior Software Engineer for its Data Platform team to develop, operate, and scale the relational database systems supporting its products and services. The role owns the serving layer end to end, including query performance, cost, and availability, on infrastructure used by product teams and serving data at petabyte scale. The position focuses on PostgreSQL and distributed PostgreSQL systems, with responsibility for keeping customer-facing APIs fast and available, improving storage and compute efficiency, automating routine database operations, protecting data integrity and latency, and maintaining real-time change-data-capture pipelines. The engineer will use AI-assisted analysis and coding tools to find and implement performance and cost improvements, validate database changes, debug replication issues, and develop reusable automation, runbooks, and internal tools. The role also contributes to platform modernization by migrating workloads from first-generation infrastructure and prototyping new data stores. The Data Platform team works asynchronously across US and Canada working hours, with purposeful synchronous collaboration, written-first technical planning, and participation in an on-call rotation. The position requires in-person R&D work weeks, typically one to two times per quarter, at a TRM hub or another designated location; approved travel, lodging, and workspace are covered.

Requirements

  • 5–8 years of experience building and operating production PostgreSQL systems, including Citus, Aurora, AlloyDB, or equivalent distributed Postgres.
  • Deep SQL optimization skills, including Explain Plans, CTEs, window functions, partitioning, index design, and query-planner behavior in distributed environments.
  • Hands-on experience with CDC tools such as PeerDB, Fivetran, Debezium, Datastream, or Airbyte.
  • Fluency with database profiling tools such as pganalyze or equivalent, including interpreting metrics and logs.
  • Production automation experience in Python or Go.
  • Daily use of AI coding tools such as Claude or Copilot, with judgment about when to trust or reject AI output.
  • A track record of using AI-assisted analysis to deliver measurable cost or performance improvements in production database systems.

Nice To Haves

  • Postgres extension development experience.

Responsibilities

  • Own query tuning, index design, and schema optimization for petabyte-scale Postgres/Citus systems to keep customer-facing APIs fast and available.
  • Use AI-assisted analysis, including pganalyze paired with Claude, to identify compression and data-model opportunities, validate changes, and ship improvements to production.
  • Build automation for routine database operations, including self-service pgbouncer provisioning, disk scaling, and blue-green deployments.
  • Drive validation of database changes before they reach production to protect data integrity and latency.
  • Manage CDC pipelines using tools such as PeerDB, Fivetran, and Debezium, and use AI tooling to debug replication failures.
  • Migrate workloads from first-generation infrastructure and prototype new data stores.
  • Codify workflows into AI-native runbooks and internal tools that teammates can reuse.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation, approximately once every 15 days, with each shift spanning a 24-hour window across two days; regional compliance review is pending for Canada.
  • Participate in in-person R&D work weeks, typically one to two times per quarter.

Benefits

  • TRM coordinates and covers approved travel, lodging, and workspace for required work weeks.
  • Accommodations are available for legitimate caregiving, health, immigration, and similar constraints.
