Senior Software Engineer, Data Infrastructure
About The Position
As a Senior/Staff Software Engineer on Voleon’s Data Infrastructure group, you will help scale and advance the company’s data infrastructure by building data-related infrastructure and tooling and collaborating with teams to improve their use of data. Working with the team lead, you will design, scope, and deliver large-scale projects, contribute to the team’s technical roadmap, and support engineering productivity and delivery. You will also mentor and develop engineers and help shape the company’s engineering culture. The role involves guiding complex initiatives from requirements gathering and system design through deployment, building scalable data infrastructure and improving the developer experience, and providing technical guidance to engineering and research staff. The team works collaboratively with machine learning researchers and values creative problem-solving, efficiency, and attention to detail.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Engineering, or equivalent.
- At least 5 years of relevant software engineering experience.
- Proven software design and implementation experience focused on correctness, robustness, efficiency, and scale.
- Experience working with large codebases and building modular, extensible, and maintainable software.
- Expertise in a modern programming language such as Python, Go, Java, or C++.
- Hands-on development experience in a Linux/UNIX environment.
- Experience designing and implementing scalable services and APIs, highly available systems, and/or large-scale data infrastructure.
- Experience with data storage and management technologies such as PostgreSQL, Artifactory, Ceph, or Redis.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to explain complex ideas clearly and simply.
Nice To Haves
- Familiarity with cluster management and containerization technologies such as Kubernetes and Docker.
- Familiarity with cloud storage, querying, and processing technologies such as Iceberg, BigQuery, Snowflake, DynamoDB, and Trino/Athena.
- Experience building data platforms with a developer-experience focus, including designing APIs, access patterns, or tooling that abstracts infrastructure complexity from end users.
- Familiarity with job scheduling and orchestration technologies such as Airflow and Slurm.
Responsibilities
- Guide complex initiatives from requirements gathering and robust system design through deployment, evaluating dependent technologies and collaborating with stakeholders.
- Build scalable data infrastructure and improve the developer experience, including owning data cataloging, versioning, and lineage for research and production workflows.
- Provide technical guidance to engineering and research staff and support teammates’ growth.
- Collaborate with the team lead to design, scope, and deliver large-scale projects.
- Help define the team’s technical roadmap and contribute to strategic engineering goals.
- Mentor and develop other engineers and help shape the company’s engineering culture.
