NextEra Energy•Saint Paul, MN

About The Position

NextEra Analytics provides energy consulting services using scientific analysis for planning, siting, forecasting, and optimizing energy projects. Its optimization and analytics platforms integrate open-source technologies and large, diverse sets of utility operating data to develop operational solutions and address challenging problems in the energy industry. The Senior Software Development Engineer joins a team building customer-centric business solutions. The role combines technical expertise with product intuition, business acumen, and ownership. The engineer partners with business leaders to understand problems, translate ideas into software, validate assumptions through iteration, and evolve prototypes into scalable production systems. The position bridges business strategy and engineering execution so technology investments deliver measurable customer and business value. The role includes end-to-end feature delivery across services, data, and user interfaces; use of agentic AI tools across the software development lifecycle; and responsibility for quality, security, reliability, and operational readiness of production systems. The engineer works autonomously and collaboratively with business stakeholders and security, risk, compliance, and platform teams.

Responsibilities

  • Own delivery of meaningful business outcomes, manage scope responsibly, and communicate technical risks early.
  • Partner with business leaders and explain architectural decisions and tradeoffs in clear, outcome-oriented terms.
  • Engage security, risk, compliance, and platform teams early, communicate tradeoffs, and advocate for alternative approaches when needed.
  • Translate technical possibilities into business capabilities and advise business leaders on tradeoffs, risks, and investment decisions.
  • Work with business stakeholders to understand operational challenges, identify root causes, and design software with measurable impact.
  • Translate loosely defined problems into robust architectures while anticipating edge cases.
  • Deliver products rapidly when appropriate to validate ideas, gather feedback, and support iteration.
  • Own features end to end across services, data, and user interfaces, using pragmatic technology choices and avoiding unnecessary complexity.
  • Use agentic AI tools throughout the software development lifecycle while remaining accountable for code quality, correctness, and security.
  • Design quality gates, specification-driven workflows, and deterministic checks to catch coding-agent errors before human review.
  • Assess emerging AI capabilities and engineering practices and adopt approaches that improve delivery speed, software quality, and developer experience.
  • Embed security and compliance throughout development and proactively mitigate vulnerabilities through secure design.
  • Build tested, maintainable software and implement CI/CD pipelines for resilient, scalable systems and a strong end-user experience.
  • Build observability, alerting, runbooks, and recovery mechanisms to make production systems measurable, debuggable, and recoverable.
  • Prioritize customer and business needs, maintain high standards, learn continuously, collaborate, take ownership, and follow through on commitments.
