About The Position

Johnson & Johnson MedTech is seeking a Senior Manufacturing Mechanical Engineer to lead new product and process development and industrialization for advanced robotic medical device systems in Milpitas and Santa Clara, California. The role focuses on surgical robotic structures and instrument drive-end mechanisms, owning the manufacturing engineering lifecycle for electromechanical assemblies that support surgical accuracy, patient safety, and clinical outcomes. The engineer will bridge design intent and manufacturing execution by developing precision assembly, metrology, and validation processes and helping ensure products can be launched and scaled while meeting quality requirements. The position involves designing and validating assembly processes, tooling, gauges, and fixtures; developing manufacturing documentation and readiness frameworks; troubleshooting electromechanical systems; and supporting continuous improvement and production transitions. It requires close collaboration with R&D, Development Engineering, Operations Process Engineering, Quality, and Production. The role also provides technical leadership, coaches junior engineers and technicians, and drives alignment across teams in a fast-paced, changing NPI environment. The anticipated base pay range for this Bay Area position is $111,000 to $178,250. Eligible employees may participate in the company’s consolidated retirement plan and 401(k) savings plan, and may be eligible for vacation, sick time, holidays, personal and family time, parental, bereavement, caregiver, volunteer, and military-spouse leave, subject to applicable plan terms and policies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 8–10 years of manufacturing or assembly engineering experience, including at least 5 years directly on precision electromechanical capital systems.
  • Demonstrated expertise assembling precision electromechanical components, harmonic drives, cable-driven mechanisms, and encoder integration.
  • Manufacturing engineering experience with BOM structure, process documentation (MPI, DHR, MES), and PFMEA.
  • Extensive troubleshooting capability across mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation domains.
  • Expert-level CAD design skills; SolidWorks is preferred.
  • Proficiency in ASME Y14.5 GD&T and 3D tolerance stack-up analysis.
  • Strong statistical proficiency, including SPC, Cpk, DOE, and Minitab or equivalent.
  • More than 3 years in a medical-regulated environment, with training and proficiency in change management systems, SOPs, and processes.
  • Systems-level thinking across IMX8, PDUs, NRTPCs, and PCB assemblies in the context of precision and surgical accuracy.
  • Exceptional technical writing skills for regulatory-grade process documentation.
  • Ability to drive alignment across R&D, Quality, Regulatory, and Operations without direct authority.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in cross-functional teams while maintaining individual accountability.
  • Strong project management skills and ability to manage multiple parallel NPI programs.
  • Strong troubleshooting mindset, including persistence in identifying and resolving root causes.
  • Comfort challenging technical decisions when manufacturing concerns arise.
  • Ability to work in ambiguity and adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
  • Demonstrated urgency, proactive ownership, direct communication, attention to detail, and high drive.

Nice To Haves

  • Medical device industry experience; a proven track record in NPI environments is highly valued.
  • Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or Precision Engineering.
  • Experience with surgical robotics platforms.
  • Six Sigma Black Belt certification.
  • Direct experience with laparoscopic MIS, orthopedic, or neurosurgical robotic platforms.
  • Experience with MES systems and PLM tools in regulated industries.

Responsibilities

  • Design and own subassembly processes for the Surgeon Interface (Console) and/or the OR Surgical Table integrated with single-axis robotic arm structures (Pivots).
  • Develop processes for harmonic drive installation and output torque efficiency testing.
  • Design motor and encoder installation processes for brushless DC open- and closed-design motor assemblies, including shaft coupling alignment, encoder homing, and commutation verification.
  • Develop controlled processes for brake assembly and verification in gravity-compensation and safety-hold joint brake systems, including brake torque testing and release force validation.
  • Define assembly and inspection processes for link structures, including shims and seals installation, bonding, and inspection acceptance criteria.
  • Define, source, and implement precision equipment, fixtures, and tools for press-fit, bearings, and other mechanical interference assemblies.
  • Define, source, and implement precision alignment and kinematic assembly fixtures.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical and electromechanical system issues and lead root cause analysis through resolution.
  • Lead mechanical design-for-manufacturing activities for complex robotic assemblies and subsystems, identifying and resolving manufacturing constraints.
  • Develop and maintain manufacturing readiness frameworks for product releases.
  • Drive cross-functional reviews with R&D, Quality, and Production to support timely product transitions.
  • Create and execute project timelines, identify risks, and implement mitigation strategies.
  • Design, validate, and document assembly processes, tooling, gauges, and fixtures for precision robotic mechanisms.
  • Develop and maintain design control records, product configurations, manufacturing procedures, lot history records, bills of materials, and quality-system documentation.
  • Apply lean manufacturing principles to reduce or eliminate waste and increase productivity.
  • Lead and participate in process and product continuous-improvement projects with measurable outcomes.
  • Monitor, coach, and mentor junior engineers and technicians on manufacturing best practices.
  • Use CAD design, rapid prototyping, tool and fixture qualification, and equipment sourcing to address manufacturing needs.
  • Collect and analyze process performance and capability data to improve operational excellence.
  • Build working relationships with R&D, Development Engineering, Operations Process Engineering, QA, and Production to develop, test, document, and implement processes, tooling, and fixtures.
  • Work with Quality to proactively address and resolve non-conformances before they affect production.
  • Identify process requirements, advise and support operations management, and implement equipment and fixtures for process development and manufacturing.
  • Maintain attention to detail while progressing work at pace.
