Senior Software Development Engineer In Test - Embedded Software/Firmware

MiniMed•Los Angeles, CA
•$124,000 - $212,000

About The Position

The Senior Software Development Engineer in Test – Embedded Software/Firmware is a coding-focused individual contributor responsible for verification and validation of embedded software used in insulin-pump systems. The role develops and maintains automated test software, reusable libraries, frameworks, and CI/CD integrations, while carrying out risk-based testing across firmware, embedded applications, device interfaces, hardware/software integration, and supporting test infrastructure. The engineer works closely with software, systems, hardware, quality, and regulatory teams to establish evidence that product requirements are met and patient safety is protected. The position combines embedded test automation, firmware verification and validation, AI-enabled quality engineering, and compliance with medical-device quality and risk processes. It also involves investigating defects, contributing to design and release-readiness activities, communicating quality risks, and providing technical guidance to test engineers.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree and at least 4 years of relevant experience, or an advanced degree and at least 2 years of relevant experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
  • Experience testing safety-critical embedded products, particularly medical devices or insulin-delivery systems, and firmware operating under real-time constraints.
  • Experience using both Python and JavaScript for embedded test automation, and familiarity with reading C or C++ firmware to support test design and defect investigation.
  • Experience designing, extending, or maintaining HIL/SIL environments, device simulators, or automated hardware test fixtures.
  • Experience architecting reusable embedded test frameworks, device communication libraries, or test-bench control utilities.
  • Experience integrating physical-device or HIL/SIL tests into CI/CD workflows, including device provisioning, bench availability, execution, reporting, and failure diagnosis.
  • Experience responsibly using AI-assisted engineering tools for embedded test development or analysis, with human review and controls for accuracy, traceability, security, and regulated use.
  • Working knowledge of verification and validation, requirements traceability, risk-based testing, defect investigation, and root-cause analysis in a regulated environment.
  • Experience testing embedded communication interfaces or protocols such as UART, SPI, I²C, CAN, USB, or Bluetooth Low Energy, as relevant to the product.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, version, and maintain production-quality automated test scripts, test library functions, framework APIs, utilities, and test data using Python and JavaScript.
  • Write clean, maintainable test software for embedded-device workflows, including device configuration, communication interfaces, logging, data capture, and result analysis.
  • Integrate, troubleshoot, and maintain automated tests in source control and CI/CD pipelines, including test execution, quality gates, reporting, and failure diagnostics.
  • Debug test scripts, framework libraries, CI/CD failures, and test-environment issues; identify root causes and implement corrective fixes.
  • Develop and execute test strategies, plans, protocols, cases, and reports for embedded pump firmware.
  • Analyze software and system requirements, architecture, interfaces, and risk controls to identify test conditions, gaps, and traceable verification evidence.
  • Perform functional, integration, regression, reliability, fault-injection, and recovery testing of embedded-device behavior.
  • Validate hardware/software interactions using HIL and SIL benches, simulators, test fixtures, and laboratory equipment.
  • Investigate defects, isolate root causes, document reproducible evidence, and work with development teams through resolution and verification.
  • Apply AI-assisted tools to requirements analysis, test design, test-data generation, log analysis, defect triage, and test documentation.
  • Evaluate AI-enabled testing capabilities for accuracy, traceability, security, intended use, and suitability for regulated medical-device development.
  • Review AI-generated outputs using engineering judgment to ensure test evidence is accurate, reproducible, and compliant with quality processes.
  • Create and maintain objective V&V evidence, including traceability among requirements, risks, tests, results, deviations, and defects.
  • Execute risk-based testing in accordance with design controls, applicable procedures, and relevant medical-device standards, including IEC 62304, ISO 13485, and risk-management processes.
  • Support design reviews, risk analyses, audits, investigations, CAPAs, and release-readiness activities as needed.
  • Identify quality risks and opportunities to improve test coverage, product reliability, and engineering processes.
  • Collaborate with Systems Engineering, Embedded Software, Hardware, Quality, Regulatory, Cybersecurity, and Manufacturing teams throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Communicate test status, quality risks, defects, and recommendations to technical and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to test engineers, share automation and embedded-test practices, and contribute as a senior team member.
