Software Engineer in Test, Embedded Firmware

Cambridge Mobile Telematics•Cambridge, MA
•$85,700 - $107,100

About The Position

Cambridge Mobile Telematics is seeking a Software Engineer in Test II with an interest in embedded firmware to join its IoT group. The group develops software for microcontroller-based sensor hardware designed and manufactured in-house. These devices collect sensor data, communicate with back-end systems and nearby devices, perform over-the-air firmware upgrades, and manage cryptographically secured storage while operating on limited memory and power. The role contributes to firmware test infrastructure and validation, including running tests against simulated firmware on Linux servers and real firmware on devices. It involves creating automated tests, investigating failures, and supporting test-related web services. The position offers exposure to embedded systems, microcontroller hardware, and equipment used to measure device parameters. CMT builds AI technology for mobility safety, including tools to understand and reduce driving risk, detect crashes, and help people receive life-saving assistance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent years of experience and/or certification in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 2 years of relevant work experience.
  • Proficiency in Python programming and willingness to read and understand C.
  • Comfort working on the Linux command line and performing basic system administration tasks.
  • Experience writing and running automated tests, ideally in a CI environment.
  • Familiarity with git and standard development workflows.
  • Strong debugging and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with diverse teams across the globe.
  • Eagerness to learn and grow, with a “leave things better than you found them” mindset.
  • Ability to balance speed and quality and ask for help when needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with Docker and cloud platforms such as AWS.
  • Exposure to embedded systems, microcontrollers, or low-level programming.
  • Experience with hardware test setups, oscilloscopes, multimeters, or reading basic schematics.
  • Experience with SQL.
  • Interest in performance measurement and instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of QA engineering practices such as test planning, defect lifecycle management, and requirements traceability.
  • Experience with build systems or release processes.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of test infrastructure for firmware validation, using independent judgment under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Execute and monitor firmware test runs for simulated firmware on Linux servers and real firmware on devices.
  • Write and maintain automated tests to improve coverage and make failures more visible.
  • Use Python for test harnesses and scripting, and read C to understand the firmware under test.
  • Use Linux for development and git for source code management.
  • Learn and apply knowledge of embedded microcontroller systems to firmware testing.
  • Assist with test systems connected to equipment that can measure parameters such as power usage.
  • Gain familiarity with microcontroller circuit boards, multimeters, benchtop power supplies, and electronic schematics.
  • Support web services for test coordination and result display, using knowledge of REST APIs and web application development.
  • Triage and investigate test failures, distinguishing firmware regressions from infrastructure issues.
  • Complete additional tasks as they arise.

Benefits

  • Annual performance bonus.
  • Equity may be awarded in the form of Restricted Stock Units (RSUs).
  • Medical, dental, vision, and life insurance.
  • 401(k) matching.
  • Short-term and long-term disability coverage.
  • Parental leave.
  • Unlimited paid time off, including vacation, sick days, and public holidays.
  • Flexible scheduling and a work-from-home policy depending on role and responsibilities.
  • Summer Fridays with half days to recharge.
  • Comprehensive wellness, education, and employee assistance programs.
  • Employee resource groups, including Black, AAPI, LGBTQIA+, Women, Book Club, and Health & Wellness.
