Visit us at www.p17solutions.com P17 Solutions has an immediate need for a skilled Adaptation Specialist to support the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Terminal Flight Data Manager (TFDM) Program. This position combines hands-on software development with site-specific configuration, integration, validation, and testing support of TFDM capabilities at terminal facilities - translating operational air traffic control requirements into facility-specific system configurations that enable safe, efficient, and tailored deployment of TFDM. This candidate will have a strong verification and validation (V&V) or test engineering background on FAA/NAS systems, hands-on web and application development skills.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Aviation, Engineering, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, or related field; or equivalent professional experience.
  • Prior experience working with or within the FAA's TFDM, TFMS, ERAM, or related SWIM-compliant NAS systems (e.g., STDDS, SAFA).
  • Minimum of 10 + years of experience in aviation systems adaptation, air traffic operations, system integration, or software verification & validation (V&V) / test engineering roles supporting mission-critical systems.
  • Ability to interpret operational needs into technical requirements and translate them into functional system configurations.
  • Hands-on software development or testing experience using web and application technologies such as Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML5, CSS3, or comparable languages, with a willingness to grow into React, Spring Boot, and Python-based tooling.
  • Experience with Linux-based environments and shell scripting to support test automation, operational baseline readiness, or deployment activities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to interface with air traffic controllers, engineers, and program stakeholders.
  • Extensive ability to travel to FAA facilities for site surveys, adaptation workshops, and deployment support as needed (>50%).

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of FAA's Acquisition Management System (AMS) lifecycle and the Joint Resources Council (JRC) processes.
  • Experience with Agile software development environments, CI/CD pipelines, and DevSecOps practices.
  • Understanding of FAA cybersecurity frameworks, RMF, and ATO processes.
  • Direct experience with ERIDS, TBFM, or TFMS second-level engineering support at the FAA William J. Hughes Technical Center.
  • Experience developing disaster recovery frameworks for distributed NAS systems, including data replication, backup, and automated restoration.
  • NetApp Certified Data Administrator (NCDA) or Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) certification.
  • Experience automating adaptation data processing between tech centers and ARTCCs (56-day chart cycles or equivalent).

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and support TFDM program software, including software release management, lab management COTS implementation, enterprise design support, maintenance planning, and general software development.
  • Support system integration testing (SIT), joint site acceptance testing (JSAT), and operational testing (OT&E) efforts.
  • Participate in pre-deployment assessments, dry-runs, and readiness reviews to ensure adaptation accuracy and completeness.
  • Assist in root cause analysis of adaptation-related issues and coordinate resolution strategies with engineering teams.
  • Architect and maintain the TFDM data pipeline and supporting virtual machine infrastructure, including always-on asynchronous multithreaded systems.
  • Design and support enterprise-level TFDM data integration using messaging systems, asynchronous processing architectures, multithreaded Java services, and SQL databases.
  • Maintain operational systems supporting TFDM training and adaptation workflows.
  • Lead the design, development, and maintenance of internal scenario generation tools and supporting applications using Java, Python, and Maven.
  • Develop and maintain automation and adaptation tools using Java, Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, React, Spring Boot, and Electron.
  • Support rapid application development using a custom stack of Linux, Oracle, Node.js, HTML, and CSS.
  • Support software installation, configuration, adaptation, acquisitions, and operational testing environments for TFDM systems and labs.
  • Configure operational parameters including gate and stand layouts, surface routing, flight data rules, and alerting thresholds.
  • Develop, manage, and validate site-specific TFDM configurations, including gate/stand layouts, surface routing, flight data rules, and alerting parameters.
  • Use adaptation tools and configuration management systems to input, update, and version-control site adaptations.
  • Maintain documentation of adaptation decisions, processes, and version histories for audit and knowledge management purposes.
  • Collaborate with Air Traffic Control (ATC), Technical Operations, engineering teams, and other stakeholders to gather and interpret operational data, procedures, and local requirements.
  • Coordinate between development, training, and operational teams to ensure successful scenario deployment and testing.
  • Provide training, guidance, and technical support on adaptation concepts to local and national stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with enterprise-level architecture, safety, and system engineering standards.
