Senior Site Reliability Engineer

Apptronik•Austin, TX

About The Position

Apptronik is a human-centered robotics company developing AI-powered robots, including its flagship humanoid robot, Apollo. The company applies expertise across the robotics stack to bring Apollo to market at scale. The Senior Site Reliability Engineer will manage and scale the DevOps platform used by engineers to develop and release robot software. The platform includes Kubernetes clusters running on bare metal and in public cloud, along with CI/CD and observability systems. The engineer will improve resilience, developer velocity, and change safety as the robot fleet and engineering organization grow. This is a hands-on role with end-to-end ownership, spanning architecture through Linux, networking, and storage.

Requirements

  • Deep knowledge of Linux operating system internals, networking, filesystems, process and resource management, and performance tuning.
  • Production Kubernetes experience, including building and upgrading clusters and debugging networking, storage, or scheduling failures.
  • Hands-on command-line debugging experience with tools such as strace, tcpdump, ss, and perf.
  • Experience with infrastructure as code and GitOps tools such as Terraform, Ansible, Helm, and Argo CD.
  • Software development skills in Go or Python, including building tools and services.
  • Knowledge of TCP/IP, DNS, TLS, load balancing, VLANs, and BGP.
  • Experience with observability, including choosing measurements, configuring alerts, and setting SLOs.
  • Ability to design for failure, investigate root causes, and remain clear-headed during outages.
  • Ability to prioritize, work independently, and complete work.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience in Site Reliability Engineering, DevOps, or Infrastructure Engineering, focused on hybrid cloud environments.
  • A record of building infrastructure from scratch and operating it reliably in production.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with hybrid infrastructure, including on-premises bare metal, virtualization, SAN or NAS storage, and at least one public cloud.
  • Experience building and operating CI/CD and build infrastructure at scale, such as remote build execution and caching, container build optimization, and runner autoscaling.
  • Experience with immutable, API-managed operating systems for Kubernetes nodes and eBPF-based networking.
  • Experience operating container registries with replication and caching across sites.
  • Experience planning disaster recovery and conducting recovery drills.
  • Experience running infrastructure on both x86_64 and ARM.
  • Experience with infrastructure for robotics, embedded systems, or IoT device fleets.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and scale Kubernetes platforms on bare metal, virtual machines, and public cloud, including provisioning, networking, storage, and upgrades.
  • Build CI/CD infrastructure, including build runners, remote build execution and caching, container registries, and autoscaling capacity on-premises or in the cloud.
  • Design and implement backups, multi-site recovery, and recovery drills.
  • Implement safe delivery practices with GitOps, progressive rollouts, and automatic rollback based on health checks.
  • Define platform SLIs and SLOs and build monitoring and alerting around them.
  • Debug production issues across Kubernetes, Linux, networking, and storage, and resolve root causes.
  • Manage infrastructure as code using tools such as Terraform, Helm, and Ansible, and write Go or Python tooling to reduce manual work.
  • Build platform security measures, including single sign-on, role-based access, certificate and secret management, and patched, minimal operating systems.
  • Partner with robotics software teams on architecture and production readiness, and establish standards for other teams.
  • Plan infrastructure capacity and cost across on-premises and cloud environments as the robot fleet and engineering team grow.
