Senior Silicon Photonics Automated Test Production Engineer

OpenLight Photonics•Santa Clara, CA
•Onsite

About The Position

As a member of OpenLight’s R&D Test Engineering team, the Senior Silicon Photonics Automated Test Production Engineer transfers Photonic Integrated Circuit (PIC) wafer and die test solutions from R&D into production. The role designs, implements, and executes tests that validate silicon photonics devices and PICs, primarily at wafer level using automated wafer probers. It also supports the team’s low-volume testing environment while helping establish reliable, repeatable, high-throughput manufacturing test processes. The position is onsite at OpenLight’s Santa Clara, California office and San Jose, California laboratory. The engineer leads the transition from low-volume testing to production, coordinates test activities with OSAT partners, and manages high-volume test handoffs, equipment and software transfers, training, and troubleshooting. The role also collaborates on yield improvement, test-time reduction, custom test hardware, and next-generation wafer and die production test capabilities.

Requirements

  • Advanced degree in Physics or Electrical Engineering.
  • Experience with Advantest 93K and automated wafer prober production testing.
  • Wafer probe card design experience.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
  • Initiative and ability to work independently.
  • Understanding of the challenges in converting experimental testing into robust manufacturing test solutions, including optical alignment repeatability, RF and optical calibration, test time, measurement variability, yield characterization, equipment limitations, and maintaining accuracy and consistency across production volumes.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in photonics and high-speed RF testing, especially at wafer level.
  • Python, C++, and/or Java programming experience.
  • Background in integrated optics.
  • Experience with the Advantest 93K ATE tester.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and execute test solutions for silicon photonics devices and Photonic Integrated Circuits, mainly at wafer level on automated wafer probers.
  • Lead the transition from low-volume testing to production.
  • Partner with test engineering and OSAT partners to define production test requirements and support manufacturing handoff.
  • Manage low-volume wafers through testing and burn-in at a local OSAT, and initially manage high-volume OSAT testing.
  • Review low-volume test hardware and software and recommend changes for high-volume production.
  • Transfer high-volume production testing to an external OSAT, including managing the bill of materials and equipment shipments, OSAT training, and software and data transfer.
  • Serve as the first point of contact for production test troubleshooting.
  • Train OSAT operators, program managers, and technicians.
  • Work with product and test engineers on yield improvement and test-time reduction.
  • Define the complete standard operating procedure for backend processes at OSATs.
  • Travel internationally occasionally to OSATs and other partner companies.
  • Specify custom hardware designs for suppliers, such as probe cards.
  • Collaborate with the test engineering team on next-generation silicon photonic wafer and die production, including active optical positioning and integrated RF testing.
  • Operate local test stations for low-volume production runs.
  • Develop test automation software in C++ or Java and conduct test analysis in Python.
  • Manage test execution schedules and communicate test plans, results, and project status to internal and external customers.
