Research Engineer (Londonderry, NH)

Outokumpu•Londonderry, NH
•$122,500 - $168,500•Onsite

About The Position

Outokumpu’s EvoMaterials Team is focused on using established and emerging technologies to advance environmentally sustainable and geopolitically secure metals production. The team’s experimental research develops and validates sulfur-based solutions for critical materials production and deep decarbonization. The Senior Research Engineer will work at a new pilot plant facility in Southern New Hampshire, contributing to sulfur technology development for new ferroalloy and stainless steel manufacturing processes. The role is central to designing, demonstrating, and implementing sulfur-based mineral treatment and metal smelting processes for different materials and applications at pilot and industrial scales.

Requirements

  • MS or PhD from an accredited college or university, or equivalent industrial experience, in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Petrochemical Engineering, Inorganic Chemistry, or a closely related field.
  • Strong theoretical and operational background in elemental sulfur handling.
  • Expertise in the design, operation, and safety considerations of high-temperature sulfur processing systems, such as Claus reactors, sulfur combustion furnaces, sulfuric acid production, nonferrous metallurgical exhaust treatment, or similar industrial processes.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and documentation.
  • Creativity and a strong desire to innovate in the metals industry.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with current processing pathways for pyrometallurgical emissions treatment systems.
  • Experience with sulfur gas handling, acid gas scrubbing, and inert atmosphere processing.
  • Proficiency in data analysis using Microsoft Excel, MATLAB, Python, or similar software.
  • Expertise in sulfur process design and safety.

Responsibilities

  • Design and support operation of high-temperature pyrometallurgical trials for new sulfur-containing metallurgical processes at pilot scale.
  • Analyze thermodynamic, kinetic, mass transport, chemical, and operational phenomena to inform process scalability from pilot to industrial scales.
  • Evaluate pathways and conditions for sulfur handling across mineral processing, metal smelting, and exhaust gas treatment operations at industrial operating scales.
  • Calculate mass and energy balances to evaluate the competitiveness of newly identified metals production processes.
  • Communicate results to members of the EvoMaterials Team and other Outokumpu stakeholders.

Benefits

  • Eight paid observed holidays plus two additional floating holidays.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with a 100% company match on the first 6% of contributions.
  • Medical coverage with HDHP and PPO plan options.
  • Employer HSA contribution of $1,000 for individuals or $2,000 for families enrolled in the HDHP plan.
  • Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA).
  • Dental and vision coverage.
  • Employer-paid short-term and long-term disability insurance.
  • Employer-paid group life and AD&D insurance equal to 2½ times annual salary, with optional supplemental life and AD&D coverage.
  • Voluntary benefits, including Aflac supplemental plans, Aura Identity and Fraud protection, and legal insurance.
