About The Position

Apple Maps’ Map Display team develops the graphics engine that powers 3D mapping and navigation experiences across Apple devices, including Watch and Vision Pro, and on the Web. The team owns the 3D visual experience in Apple Maps and supports a broad ecosystem of first- and third-party applications. The role focuses on rendering the world beautifully and efficiently in real time, working at the intersection of art and engineering with designers and cartographers. The engineer will develop rendering algorithms and features for experiences such as 3D imagery, landmarks, streets, and transit systems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) and at least 5 years of hands-on experience building real-time 3D rendering applications.
  • Mastery of writing safe, performant, readable, maintainable C++.
  • Experience with one or more modern graphics APIs, such as Metal, Vulkan, Direct3D 12, or WebGPU, and shading languages such as MSL, HLSL, GLSL, or WGSL.
  • Ability to apply 3D geometry and linear algebra to graphics problems.
  • Experience with multithreaded engine architectures and synchronization.
  • Methodical debugging approach and persistent problem-solving skills.
  • Communication skills to explain complex ideas clearly to leadership, and collaboration skills to focus teams’ efforts.
  • Strong ownership of shipped features.
  • Experience navigating the full software development lifecycle, from design whiteboarding through shipping optimized code.
  • Proficiency with GPU profiling tools and performance optimization for mobile platforms.

Nice To Haves

  • Track record of shipping interactive rendering or game engines at scale for mobile platforms such as iOS, Android, or Linux.
  • Familiarity with AR/VR rendering technologies and the challenges of immersive environments.

Responsibilities

  • Architect and implement Maps rendering features and technologies across Apple platforms.
  • Partner with HI and Cartography teams to design new visual experiences.
  • Help drive long-term technical strategy and roadmaps for future rendering and Maps experiences.
  • Contribute to decisions balancing visual quality, implementation complexity, and platform constraints.
  • Optimize rendering performance and power efficiency across Apple’s hardware ecosystem.
  • Contribute to team culture through architecture and code reviews, mentorship, and leadership by example.
  • Take ownership of features from design through shipping quality, optimized code.
