About The Position

Mob Entertainment is hiring a Rendering Engineer for its Core Engineering team to build, optimize, and maintain Unreal Engine 5 rendering systems and visual pipelines. The role focuses on the visual fidelity and performance of the studio’s games, with rendering work tailored to dark, atmospheric horror titles. The engineer will collaborate with the Lead Engineer, technical artists, and lighting and environment artists, and will have ownership over how the game looks and runs. The role includes developing rendering features and shaders, making lighting-strategy decisions, profiling and optimizing performance, resolving rendering issues across target hardware, and creating tools for artists and engineers. The engineer will also help define and enforce performance and fidelity standards, work within the studio’s Perforce/UGS/Horde pipeline, and assess new Unreal Engine rendering features for production needs. The position offers direct influence over the visual identity of a flagship franchise, close collaboration with engineering leadership and art direction, and a collaborative engineering culture with senior and lead support. The posting lists location-dependent annual base salary ranges: $152,000–$184,000 for specified metropolitan areas; $132,000–$160,000 for another set of metropolitan areas; and $113,000–$136,000 for all other U.S. locations. Final compensation depends on factors such as experience, qualifications, and work location.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of professional experience as a rendering or graphics engineer.
  • At least one shipped title using Unreal Engine.
  • Strong C++ skills and a solid understanding of Unreal’s rendering pipeline, including RDG, shader compilation, the material system, and deferred rendering.
  • Experience with HLSL/shader authoring and debugging rendering issues using tools such as RenderDoc or Unreal Insights.
  • Practical experience with UE5 lighting systems, including World Partition, GPU Lightmass, and Lumen, and the tradeoffs between them.
  • Strong performance-profiling instincts and experience meeting platform-specific frame budgets.
  • Comfort working in a structured, multi-team pipeline using Perforce or a similar tool, with defined branching and review processes.
  • Ability to communicate rendering constraints and tradeoffs clearly to artists and designers.

Nice To Haves

  • Production experience with Nanite, Substrate, or other newer UE5 rendering features.
  • Experience in horror or atmospheric genres, particularly with stylized or high-contrast lighting environments.
  • Experience building custom rendering tools or editor extensions.
  • Console platform rendering or certification experience.
  • A technical art background or close collaboration history with technical artists.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, extend, and optimize Unreal Engine 5 rendering features and shaders, including materials, post-process, lighting, and custom rendering passes.
  • Own lighting-strategy decisions in partnership with environment art and lead engineering, including World Partition, GPU Lightmass, and Lumen versus baked-lighting tradeoffs.
  • Profile and optimize GPU and CPU rendering performance against defined platform targets and fidelity standards.
  • Diagnose and resolve rendering bugs, visual artifacts, and platform-specific rendering issues across target hardware.
  • Build and maintain internal tools for artists and engineers, such as profiling visualizers and lighting-validation tools.
  • Collaborate with technical artists on shader-authoring standards, material-complexity budgets, and visual-fidelity guardrails.
  • Contribute to and help enforce studio performance and fidelity standards documentation.
  • Work within the Perforce/UGS/Horde pipeline and follow team branching and Definition of Done standards.
  • Stay current on Unreal Engine rendering roadmap changes, including Lumen, Nanite, and Substrate, and evaluate their fit for production needs.
