Senior Reactor Modelling Scientist

Outokumpu•Haverhill Township, MN
•$122,600 - $168,500

About The Position

Outokumpu is seeking a motivated Senior Reactor Modelling Scientist to join its Green Metals Team in the Greater Boston Area, Massachusetts. The team works to advance environmentally sustainable metals production by applying established technologies and emerging innovations. Its scientific and engineering work focuses on developing and validating solutions for decarbonization and new product development in extractive and chemical metallurgy. The successful candidate will help address technical challenges in ferroalloy and stainless steel manufacturing and contribute to the design, demonstration, and implementation of new mineral treatment and metal smelting processes for a range of materials and applications. The role uses reactor modelling and analysis to support the selection, design, and scale-up of laboratory, pilot, and industrial-scale furnaces and equipment.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. degree from an accredited college or university, or equivalent experience, in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, metallurgical engineering, mining engineering, materials science, nuclear engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of heat transport, mass transport, kinetics, and thermodynamic phenomena within chemical reactors.
  • At least 5 years of experience in chemical or metallurgical reactor design and modelling.
  • Strong leadership, organization, collaboration, and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with the chemistry of minerals, slags, mattes, and metals.
  • Familiarity with current processing pathways for major commodity metals, including steel, chromium, nickel, molybdenum, aluminum, and copper.
  • Experience or capability in chemical reactor design, furnace design, and pilot-scale equipment design.
  • Computer-aided design skills using software such as SOLIDWORKS or AutoCAD.
  • Multiphysics modelling and finite element analysis skills using software such as COMSOL.
  • Thermodynamic calculations for chemical metallurgy applications using software such as FactSage, Thermo-Calc, or HSC Chemistry.
  • Data analysis and engineering calculation skills using software such as MATLAB, Python, or Microsoft Excel.

Responsibilities

  • Model reactors to support the selection and design of new laboratory, pilot, and industrial-scale furnaces and equipment for mineral treatment and metal production processes.
  • Analyze thermodynamic, kinetic, heat- and mass-transport, and chemical metallurgical phenomena to inform reactor selection and scalability.
  • Work with stakeholders to identify and eliminate scientific, engineering, and operational bottlenecks affecting the design and implementation of new reactor technologies.
  • Collaborate with team members to help establish effective laboratory, engineering, and operational practices for new reactor technologies.
  • Communicate modelling results to the Green Metals Team and other research and development groups within Outokumpu.

Benefits

  • Eight paid observed holidays and two additional floating holidays.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with a 100% company match on the first 6% of employee contributions.
  • Medical coverage with HDHP and PPO plan options.
  • Employer HSA contribution of $1,000 for individual coverage or $2,000 for family coverage for team members enrolled in the HDHP plan.
  • Health Savings Accounts (HSA) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA).
  • Dental and vision coverage.
  • Employer-paid short-term and long-term disability insurance.
  • Employer-paid group life and AD&D insurance equal to 2½ times annual salary, with optional supplemental life and AD&D coverage.
  • Voluntary benefits, including Aflac supplemental plans, Aura identity and fraud protection, and legal insurance.
  • Employer-paid wellness programs, including Calm Health, Hinge Health, and Lark.
