This is a hybrid role requiring 3 days onsite in Northbrook, IL. The Senior Project Engineer - Engineered Materials independently determines project scope, develops a preliminary plan of investigation, and determines project specifications such as cost, time, and sample requirements by analyzing client input, available supplemental data, and product construction. Projects may include limited travel to conduct or witness tests at client sites. The role involves initiating communication with clients to promote and explain the benefits of new and existing services, managing projects within business expectations/metrics, and communicating with clients to discuss technical issues, explain UL procedures and requirements, convey project cost, and negotiate completion date and sample requirements. The engineer will act to address client concerns and resolve complex client issues, provide technical assistance to clients in reference to product inspection and follow-up services, and establish appropriate test programs by reviewing files and manufacturer's information, examining samples, and applying UL requirements. They will determine areas in which the product is not in compliance with UL requirements or of any changes in project scope or specifications and notify the client. The role includes coordinating complex laboratory activities by preparing data sheets and instructions to technicians and establishing completion dates. The engineer will serve as Project Handler of record and sign as Reviewer of record as assigned based on qualification. They will communicate project status and results to clients through frequent contact and by preparing reports, and prepare Follow-Up Service Procedures and information pages. Integration of continuous improvement concepts and techniques into all aspects of the job is expected. The engineer will resolve complex engineering issues associated with UL's Surveillance Program by analyzing and reporting on the acceptability of variations. They will develop UL requirements for testing products beyond the scope of existing standards, or those involving unique features requiring frequent use of independent judgment, and develop special test methods and test equipment. The role may involve representing UL on technical committees and/or industry-related functions such as seminars and trade shows. Training of office, field, and/or laboratory staff and entry-level engineers as appropriate is also a responsibility. The engineer will provide technical assistance in several product categories, operations or systems to laboratory and/or field staff. Adherence to the Underwriters Laboratories Code of Conduct and all physical and digital security practices is required. Other duties as directed will be performed.
