About The Position

Collins Aerospace in Rockford, Illinois is seeking a Senior Principal Systems Engineer to join its Electric Power Systems Power Distribution team. The position involves collaborating with both local and remote team members to develop optimal system architectures that balance technical performance with lifecycle cost efficiency. The selected candidate will be responsible for defining, maintaining, documenting, and validating system requirements for secondary power distribution products.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 10 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 7 years of experience
  • Experience in systems engineering, within aerospace or power distribution/conversion systems.

  • Ability to work on cross-functional teams and communicate effectively in internal and external reviews.
  • Experience with structured development processes, including well-documented requirements, designs, and testing.
  • Ability to work independently and within integrated product teams.
  • Broad lifecycle experience from requirements through system integration and lab verification.
  • Systems engineering experience across architecture, requirements, development, validation, and verification.
  • Familiarity with aircraft certification standards (ARP4754, ARP4761, FAR/JAR) and electrical system architectures.
  • Experience with DOORS and familiarity with RTCA, FAA, ARINC, MIL, and ISO standards.
  • Background in electrical subsystems (e.g., Chapter 24, power distribution, actuation systems).
  • Ability to estimate engineering tasks and lead technical efforts.
  • Strong technical writing skills (white papers, trade studies, technical documents).
  • Knowledge of Synergy, CM tools, Polarion, and communication protocols (ARINC 664/429/825, CAN, CAN FD, TTP).

Responsibilities

  • Work in a team environment, including collaboration with remote team members, to support full lifecycle development (plan, design, verify, and certify/qualify) of electric power distribution and conversion systems, ensuring compliance with aerospace standards (e.g., ARP4754).
  • Develop distribution system architectures that meet or exceed product development requirements.
  • Validate product design performance, capability, and reliability in engineering test laboratories.
  • Collaborate with internal systems and software teams to analyze and conduct engineering investigations on electronic products.
  • Partner with internal and external teams to integrate distribution product designs into Chapter 24 aircraft electrical systems.
  • Mentor junior team members in both product knowledge and engineering processes.
  • Engage with customers to define requirements, solutions, implementation approaches, system impacts, and design effectiveness.
  • Participate in internal design reviews.
  • Contribute to discipline-wide Systems Engineering standards and procedures.
