About The Position

BBN Technologies, part of RTX, develops and rapidly prototypes sensor systems for customers in the Department of Defense, the Intelligence Community, and industry. Its work combines electromagnetic physics and propagation phenomenology with expertise in analysis, statistical signal processing, optimization, and machine learning to produce actionable information from sensor data. The team is seeking an RF Signal Processing Research Scientist to derive and implement research-grade algorithms and apply them to data collected from real sensors. The role involves research and development across statistical and cyclostationary signal processing, adaptive signal processing, RF propagation and signature modeling, sensing, physical-layer communications, machine learning, and optimization. The successful candidate will apply advanced methods and R&D techniques to challenging problems, work proactively with minimal supervision, lead small technical teams, document plans and scientific findings, and have opportunities to present results to government customers. Some overnight travel is required.

Requirements

  • M.S. in Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, or Physics plus 10 years of relevant experience, or a Ph.D. plus 8 years of experience.
  • Experience with signal processing, including estimation and detection.
  • Experience with RF modeling and sensing.
  • Active and transferable U.S. government Top Secret clearance; TS/SCI clearance is specified, and an active, existing clearance is required on day one.
  • U.S. citizenship, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for the required security clearance.
  • Experience applying advanced methods, theories, and R&D techniques to solve difficult problems.
  • Ability to tackle research challenges proactively with minimal supervision and periodic check-ins with team leads.
  • Experience leading small teams of technical contributors.
  • Experience documenting plans and scientific findings, with opportunities to present to government customers.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in several of the listed technical areas, including statistical or cyclostationary signal processing, adaptive signal processing, RF propagation and signature modeling, sensing, physical-layer communications, machine learning, and optimization.

Responsibilities

  • Derive and implement research-grade signal-processing algorithms and apply them to real sensor data.
  • Conduct work involving statistical signal processing, including estimation, detection, performance measures, and estimator performance bounds.

  • Apply adaptive signal-processing methods, including temporal and space-time adaptive processing, interference covariance estimation, Wiener filtering, LMS, RLS, Kalman filtering, particle filtering, and multi-hypothesis tracking.
  • Apply machine learning and optimization to optimal control.
  • Model RF propagation and signatures, including propagation environments, antenna patterns, bistatic RCS, and target kinematics.
  • Conduct sensing research involving sparse array processing, beamforming, direction finding, filtering, tracking, radar, SAR, and signal classification and recognition.
  • Work on physical-layer communications, including modulation, channel estimation and tracking, MIMO, equalization, forward error correction, decoding, LPX waveform design, and multi-user detection.
  • Apply advanced methods, theories, and R&D techniques to solve difficult problems.
  • Proactively address research challenges with minimal supervision and periodic check-ins with team leads.
  • Lead small teams of technical contributors.
  • Document plans and scientific findings and present findings to government customers.
  • Travel overnight as required.
