Senior Principal Electrical Engineer- Power Systems

Epirus•Torrance, CA
•$175,000 - $245,000

About The Position

Epirus is seeking a Senior Principal Electrical Engineer to own power-systems product development from conception and prototyping through productization. The engineer will work with a fast-paced engineering team to apply emerging technologies and lead systems integration for a High Power Microwave phased-array power system. The role designs and implements power distribution, communications, safety, and other electrical systems, and reports to the Senior Manager of Electrical Engineering. The role leads the design and integration of power-electronics subsystems for large-scale phased arrays, from prototype development through full-scale production. It includes hands-on wiring, testing, and debugging; developing system power budgets and engineering analyses; defining power-system requirements, architecture, and organizational safety practices; coordinating with suppliers and internal teams; and mentoring junior engineers. Occasional travel is required.

Requirements

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Systems Engineering.
  • 12 or more years of industry experience, preferably spanning the product lifecycle from concept to field deployment; advanced degrees may be used in place of years of experience.
  • Ability to articulate and defend technical decisions, with clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of Jira and Scrum best practices.
  • Ability to travel occasionally.
  • U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a U.S. clearance; ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. clearance is required.
  • Must meet ITAR eligibility requirements: be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain required U.S. Department of State authorizations.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience implementing high-voltage power distribution and battery systems up to 800V.
  • Experience designing and implementing three-phase AC (120V/208V/240V/480V) and high-voltage DC power subsystems for directed-energy systems.
  • Familiarity with fieldbus and other communication protocols relevant to power subsystems and industrial automation, such as RS485, RS232, CAN, EtherCAT, and Ethernet.
  • Knowledge of applicable industry standards, such as MIL-STD and IEC standards.
  • Proficiency in standard practices and design rules for high-voltage/high-power wiring and harness design.
  • Experience with Design Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) for identifying and mitigating potential system failures.
  • Aerospace/defense or military experience, or experience in directed energy or a similar industry such as aircraft power, radar power systems, laser systems, or automotive/electric-vehicle power.

Responsibilities

  • Design and prototype critical power-electronics subsystems, especially prime-power distribution and conversion.
  • Develop system-level power budgets and coordinate requirements with subsystem design teams.
  • Create and review engineering analyses, including electric power load analyses (EPLAs), short-circuit calculations, power-system studies, voltage-drop and lighting calculations, and harmonic analyses.
  • Lead design and integration of power-electronics subsystems for large-scale phased arrays, from prototype development through full-scale production.
  • Define organizational high-voltage safety standards and best practices, and lead safety checks at key integration milestones.
  • Define and refine technical requirements and specifications for High Power Microwave power subsystems and power distribution and conversion architecture.
  • Perform hands-on wiring, testing, and debugging of high-power phased-array systems.
  • Lead power-distribution system architecture through trade studies, single-line diagrams, benchmarking, and architecture reviews.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external suppliers on component design, testing, and evaluation to meet system requirements.
  • Mentor junior engineers in power-system fundamentals, design principles, and ruggedization techniques.
