Principal Electrical Engineer, Power Systems

Astro Mechanica•San Francisco, CA
•$250,000 - $290,000•Onsite

About The Position

Astro Mechanica is seeking a Principal Electrical Engineer focused on power systems development. The role works across aviation and ground power teams to develop the electrical system for the company’s 13 MW aeroderivative generator, designed to provide fast, on-site power for data centers and industrial sites. The engineer is responsible for the medium-voltage electrical system that converts aircraft engines into ground power plants. This hands-on, high-ownership position sets the system architecture, conducts studies, specifies equipment, leads validation and commissioning, and serves as the technical authority on electrical safety. The engineer collaborates with mechanical, controls, and manufacturing teams and represents the product with customers, utilities, and certification bodies.

Requirements

  • BS, MS, or PhD with a focus on electrical engineering.
  • 10 or more years of experience designing, building, testing, and shipping electrical power systems.
  • Deep experience with medium-voltage systems (1–38 kV), including generators, transformers, switchgear, protective relays, and paralleling/grid-interconnect schemes.
  • Strong command of power system analysis, including symmetrical components, fault calculations, protection coordination, and arc flash.
  • Proficiency in ETAP, SKM, or EasyPower.
  • Working knowledge of applicable codes and standards, including NEC, IEEE, IEC, UL, and NFPA 70E, and experience taking a product through certification.
  • Hands-on field experience commissioning and troubleshooting medium-voltage equipment and generator control systems.
  • Track record of owning a complex electrical product from concept through production with cross-functional teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with power electronics, including inverters, rectifiers, and excitation systems.
  • Familiarity with controls integration, including SCADA, PLC, and communication protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Translate product requirements into electrical specifications, one-line diagrams, schematics, and bills of materials.
  • Own the electrical architecture and design of the plant, including transformers, switchgear, cabling, protection, and grounding.
  • Perform and review power system studies, including load flow, short-circuit, protection coordination, arc flash, grounding, harmonics, and transient analysis.
  • Ensure compliance with NEC, IEEE, IEC, UL, NFPA 70E, and utility interconnection requirements; own electrical safety and product certification.
  • Mentor engineers, review designs, and serve as the technical interface to customers, utilities, and suppliers.
  • Lead validation and commissioning of the electrical system.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance, including Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA).
