Principal Electrical Engineer, Power Systems

Boom Supersonic•Centennial, CO
•$162,000 - $225,000

About The Position

Superpower is a 42 MW gas turbine built to power AI data centers. This is a load profile that doesn't behave like anything the grid was designed around, on a timeline the power industry doesn't usually move on. The electrical system is what makes the engine possible: how it senses itself, protects itself, and delivers power reliably under conditions nothing else has been built to handle. We're looking for a principal electrical engineer to own that system. This isn’t a narrow role. You will work across the full electrical scope of the engine, including power distribution, protection, instrumentation, and controls interfaces. These aren't separate workstreams. They're one system, and someone needs to own it end to end. If you've been the person in the room who actually knows how the whole electrical system fits together and wants to build one from a blank sheet, this is that job.

Requirements

  • 7+ years designing and proving electrical systems for power-dense, safety-critical, or first-of-its-kind hardware, such as grid-scale battery systems (Megapack, Powerpack, or similar), motorsport power units (F1, Formula E, IndyCar, LMDh/LMH), aerospace/satellite power and avionics, or comparable high-performance electrical platforms.
  • Real depth in at least two of: power distribution, protection systems, instrumentation, high-power electronics, or controls hardware. You also have working fluency across all of them.
  • A track record of taking a system from blank page to tested hardware, and owning what happens when it doesn't work the first time.
  • Comfort making difficult decisions with incomplete information, and the ability to quickly respond when new information invalidates those decisions.
  • Hands-on lab and test experience where you debug with a probe in your hand, not just a datasheet.
  • You've owned electrical systems end to end, from architecture through schematic capture, hardware bring-up, and field validation, rather than have handed off a design and waited for someone else's test data.
  • You think in systems. You can move fluidly between power electronics, protection, instrumentation, and controls because you understand how they interact.
  • You'd rather be at the test cell debugging an issue than creating endless white papers on what could happen.
  • You want to set the architecture and defend the tradeoffs yourself. Not execute someone else's spec or wait for sign-off.
  • You're energized by ambiguity. When there's no spec to follow, you write one.
  • U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.

Responsibilities

  • Own the electrical architecture for major portions of Superpower, such as power distribution, protection, instrumentation, and controls interfaces. Ownership spans from first concept through finalized and validated, running hardware.
  • Design and build the systems that monitor, protect, and sense the engine under real operating conditions.
  • Partner directly with propulsion, mechanical, controls, and test engineering to integrate electrical systems into a gas turbine platform built from scratch.
  • Effectively manage vendor relationships for critical pieces of outsourced hardware.
  • Lead root-cause investigation when hardware doesn't behave the way the model said it would, in real time, during a test.
  • Set technical direction for other engineers working within your system.

Benefits

  • long-term incentives/equity
  • a flexible PTO policy
  • many other progressive benefits
