About The Position

Honeywell is seeking a dedicated Senior Advanced Electrical Engineer to serve as the subject matter expert for the University of Maryland (UMD) NextGen Energy Program Public-Private Partnership (P3). The role is responsible for the electrical, instrumentation, and control facets of UMD Energy Systems operations. It requires onsite presence at the UMD College Park campus at least five days during each standard work week, availability at other times in an emergency, and dedication solely to the NextGen Program, with no Affiliate engineering responsibilities. The engineer will analyze, design, and operate medium-voltage distribution systems, power generation, and industrial instrumentation and control systems; perform power-system studies; optimize central energy plant equipment and distribution; and manage vendors and capital projects. The role also supports replacement of obsolete systems and UMD decarbonization and sustainability goals while maintaining contractual KPIs and operating-budget requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution of higher education.
  • At least 8 years of direct experience analyzing, designing, and operating electrical equipment and systems, including medium-voltage electric distribution systems at or above 13.8 kV, electric power generation, and industrial instrumentation and control systems.
  • Experience modeling with SKM PowerTools for short-circuit, coordination, and arc-flash studies.
  • Ability to be physically present on the UMD campus at least five days during each standard work week and available at all other times in the event of an emergency.
  • Dedication solely to the NextGen Program; Affiliate engineering responsibilities are not permitted.
  • Ability to meet all requirements for Professional Engineer (PE) licensure and obtain the license within 12 months of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • At least 3 years of SCADA or DCS experience in a central utility plant environment.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license registered in Maryland, or ability to obtain reciprocity.
  • At least 3 years of combined-cycle power plant experience.
  • At least 2 years of protection-relay design, operation, and programming experience.
  • At least 2 years of PLC operation and programming experience.
  • Strong desire to provide customer service and build long-term, successful working relationships with UMD personnel and stakeholders.
  • Ability to adapt to new technologies and support campus master-planning initiatives.
  • Program-management skills and experience managing capital projects.
  • Self-motivation, ability to work with little supervision, and initiative to get things done.
  • Ability to convey subtle or complex technical messages clearly for the topic and audience.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary subject matter expert for electrical, instrumentation, and control components, equipment, and systems associated with UMD Energy Systems.
  • Analyze, design, and operate medium-voltage electric distribution systems at or above 13.8 kV, electric power generation, and industrial instrumentation and control systems.
  • Perform power-systems modeling, short-circuit, coordination, and arc-flash studies using SKM PowerTools for Windows (PTW).
  • Conduct load-flow analysis and evaluate new-building tie-in requests and load allocations for campus expansion projects.
  • Optimize and maintain gas, steam, and diesel turbine generator sets.
  • Upgrade, maintain, and troubleshoot variable-frequency drives for 13.8 kV and 4160V motors.
  • Upgrade and maintain medium-voltage breakers, switchgear, and protection relays.
  • Analyze real-time SCADA/DCS data to optimize central energy plant and distribution-network performance.
  • Maintain systems in accordance with the operating budget and contractual Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
  • Implement new technologies to replace obsolete systems and support UMD decarbonization and sustainability goals.
  • Interface with and manage vendors, subcontractors, and third-party engineering firms.
  • Manage capital projects from design through completion, ensuring compliance with UMD design criteria and interconnection standards.
  • Assess job hazards and procedures for the lock-out/tag-out program in coordination with the NextGen Safety Manager.
  • Maintain onsite presence at UMD at least five days each standard work week and be available at other times for emergencies.
