Sr Principal Electrical Engineer, CRM

Medtronic•Mounds View, MN
•$176,800 - $265,200•Onsite

About The Position

The Senior Principal Electrical Engineer is a key individual contributor on Medtronic’s Cardiac Rhythm Management (CRM) Electrical System Design Team. The role drives the definition, design, integration, and verification of complex mixed-signal electronics for active implantable cardiac devices and external patient systems, contributing to high-quality, safety-critical technologies intended to improve patient outcomes. The position is based in Mounds View, Minnesota, in the Minneapolis–St. Paul metro area, and requires working onsite at least five days per week. Depending on the candidate’s strengths, the role may focus on technical leadership, hardware block ownership, or both. Technical leadership involves providing technical direction on complex R&D programs, supporting engineering teams, and serving as a technical liaison to program management and manufacturing. Hardware block ownership involves responsibility for critical system blocks, including their requirements, design documentation, integration, troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and verification. The engineer develops and evaluates product circuitry, integrates electronics with firmware, mechanical, and system-level requirements, and leads design reviews and verification activities. The position also supports production test development, manufacturing, and global manufacturing sites, and helps ensure hardware requirements and designs meet applicable safety-critical and reliability standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 10 years of relevant experience; or a master’s degree and at least 8 years of relevant experience; or a Ph.D. and at least 6 years of relevant experience.
  • For a bachelor’s degree earned outside the United States, the degree must satisfy the requirements of 8 C.F.R. § 214.2(h)(4)(iii)(A).

  • Proficiency in analog and mixed-signal circuit design, analysis, and debugging.
  • Experience designing for high-reliability or safety-critical applications, such as medical, aerospace, or automotive safety.
  • Hands-on debugging skills using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, RF analyzers, and low-current and low-noise measurement tools.
  • Circuit simulation expertise with PSPICE, LTspice, or similar tools.
  • RF design or RF performance evaluation experience.
  • Programming or scripting experience in Python, C/C++, or LabVIEW for test automation and data analysis.
  • Experience with Class III medical device development, verification, and validation.
  • Familiarity with applicable standards, such as ISO 14708 and IEC 60601.
  • Experience with system modeling in MATLAB.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to influence across disciplines.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership on complex R&D programs.
  • Support design and architectural tradeoffs, technical risk management, and issue resolution from concept through launch.
  • Lead and mentor electrical engineers through design, integration, characterization, troubleshooting, and verification.
  • Serve as a technical liaison to program management and manufacturing and support cross-functional development teams.
  • Own key hardware blocks in implantable or external system architectures, including mixed-signal, analog, digital, RF, and/or PCB layout architecture and implementation.
  • Own hardware block requirements, design documentation, and verification strategy.
  • Perform detailed circuit analysis, simulation, characterization, and design margin assessment.
  • Lead root-cause investigations, debug complex hardware/firmware interactions, and propose design fixes and mitigations.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams to integrate and deliver hardware solutions.
  • Develop, analyze, and evaluate new product circuitry, including ultra-low-power analog, mixed-signal, and digital electronics.
  • Integrate electronics with firmware, mechanical, and system-level requirements to deliver complete product solutions.
  • Lead technical design reviews and influence engineering decisions throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Develop test plans, characterization methods, and verification strategies, including bench, automated, and system-level testing.
  • Define production test requirements and collaborate with manufacturing engineering on PCB and device assembly.
  • Support global manufacturing sites with troubleshooting, test failure analysis, and product improvements.
  • Develop and validate test environments, including automation frameworks and emulators for product evaluation.
  • Decompose system requirements into implementable hardware requirements and ensure compliance with safety-critical and reliability standards.
  • Mentor junior engineers and influence best practices in design rigor, simulation methodology, and documentation.
