About The Position

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is developing commercially viable fusion power plants and is hiring a Senior Power Electronics Engineer for its Pulsed Electrical Distribution System (PEDS) team. The role will focus on developing and qualifying next-generation power supplies for ARC, the company’s planned grid-scale commercial fusion power plant. The supplies are also expected to provide SPARC with over 1 GW of pulsed power in 2027. The engineer will lead work on high-power, medium-voltage power supplies, from circuit architecture and component qualification through prototype construction, testing, validation, and productization. The position also supports related electrical power systems and requires documenting engineering work and presenting results. The role is based in a facility with industrial hazards and requires compliance with U.S. Export Control Laws.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of related experience with a bachelor's degree, or at least 6 years of experience with a master's degree, in power electronics-based systems.
  • Hands-on product development experience with power electronic converter systems.
  • Knowledge of inverter circuit topologies and their benefits and limitations.
  • Experience with modeling and simulation tools such as PLECS, PSPICE, or MATLAB.
  • Extensive experience with semiconductor devices such as IGBTs and MOSFETs, and magnetic components such as transformers and inductors.
  • Fundamental understanding of gate-drive circuits, design, and device protection.
  • Experience with packaging design for power conversion equipment and thermal management.
  • Experience with high-power electrical equipment above 10 MVA.
  • Hands-on laboratory testing of electrical components, subassemblies, and systems, including use of oscilloscopes and other measurement equipment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, type, or sit for extended periods.
  • Willingness to travel or occasionally work required nights, weekends, or on-call.
  • Ability to work in a facility containing industrial hazards, including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics.
  • Ability to comply with U.S. laws concerning export-controlled or protected technologies and information.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in electrical engineering with a focus on power electronics.
  • Experience applying compliance standards such as IEC, UL, CSA, or NEC to designs.
  • Experience in problem solving, root cause analysis, and field containment actions.
  • Hands-on prototype build and testing experience, including documentation of results.
  • Experience designing intelligent gate-drive circuits.

Responsibilities

  • Architect and design next-generation high-power (>10 MVA), medium-voltage power supplies for ARC tokamaks using silicon and silicon carbide semiconductor devices.
  • Collaborate with power semiconductor device manufacturers to develop and qualify devices for fusion-focused applications.
  • Model and simulate power electronic circuits and components to evaluate converter performance, efficiency, and stability.
  • Build, test, and validate prototype four-quadrant power modules, including H-bridges, DC links, passives, and thermal management.
  • Turn qualified prototype designs into productized solutions for ARC power supplies.
  • Develop technical requirements, specifications, and qualification plans for power circuit components such as capacitors, magnetics, and passives.
  • Support cross-functional technical developments involving power distribution, energy storage, RF, and other electrical power systems for fusion applications.
  • Document designs, simulations, and test results in engineering reports.
  • Conduct design reviews and organize and present results to expert and non-technical audiences.
