About The Position

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska is seeking a Senior Platform Engineer to own and advance its enterprise Databricks platform, which supports data engineering, analytics, and AI. The role is part of a small, growing Platform Engineering team that also owns GitHub Enterprise and Azure API Management. Databricks is the initial focus, with the opportunity to back up another platform and help shape future platform work. The ideal candidate lives within driving distance of the Omaha, Nebraska office. The role offers remote flexibility, with one day per week in the office; Omaha is preferred and receives first consideration. Candidates living in approved states—Florida, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, and Texas—may need to travel to headquarters based on business needs. The Senior Platform Engineer leads the technical direction, reliability, security, lifecycle, and cost effectiveness of Databricks. The position develops platform standards, reusable capabilities, infrastructure automation, and self-service patterns; supports responsible adoption of AI capabilities; leads modernization and security work; and partners with security, architecture, compliance, and data teams. The engineer also mentors colleagues and serves as backup for another Platform Engineering platform. Applicants need a relevant bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience, and seven years of relevant technical experience. They must have production experience administering and securing an enterprise cloud data platform, experience delivering reusable platform capabilities, experience with Infrastructure-as-Code and automation, and advanced knowledge of relevant cloud technologies. The company is unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa. On-call work may be required based on business needs and role assignment. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, Data Engineering, Information Systems, or a related technical field; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Seven years of experience in information technology, data engineering, cloud operations, platform engineering, DevOps, infrastructure support, or a related technical field.
  • Hands-on production experience administering, securing, and troubleshooting an enterprise cloud data platform such as Databricks, Snowflake, Microsoft Fabric, or a comparable platform, including configuration, compute, jobs, SQL warehouses, permissions, and usage policies.
  • Experience delivering reusable data platform capabilities, guardrails, or deployment patterns adopted by multiple teams.
  • Experience building Infrastructure-as-Code with Terraform or comparable tools and automating with Python, PowerShell, platform CLIs, or REST APIs.
  • Advanced knowledge of cloud identity, networking, storage, security, and monitoring as they relate to enterprise data platforms; Microsoft Azure is preferred.
  • Ability to meet or exceed department attendance and timeliness requirements.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment and build and maintain positive relationships with staff, departments, and customers.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties satisfactorily, with reasonable accommodations where applicable.
  • The company is unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa at this time.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience operating enterprise data platforms in regulated or security-conscious environments such as healthcare or financial services.
  • Data platform or cloud certifications, such as Databricks, Snowflake, or Microsoft Azure certifications in platform administration, data engineering, security, or architecture.
  • Experience leading data platform migrations, data governance or catalog adoption such as Unity Catalog, disaster recovery planning, or other major modernization efforts.
  • Experience with GitHub Enterprise or Azure API Management, or a track record of quickly ramping up on new platforms.
  • Track record of mentoring engineers, influencing technical strategy, and delivering measurable platform outcomes.
  • Microsoft Azure experience.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the technical direction, health, reliability, and lifecycle of the enterprise Databricks platform, including workspace configuration, compute, jobs, and SQL warehouses.
  • Define and enforce standards for identity, access, networking, Unity Catalog, and sensitive-data controls, with clear ownership boundaries between platform and workload teams.
  • Build Terraform-based Infrastructure-as-Code and automation using GitHub, the Databricks CLI, REST APIs, Python, or PowerShell, and publish reusable patterns for data, analytics, and AI workloads.
  • Apply AI-assisted engineering to platform support and enable governed adoption of Databricks AI capabilities such as Genie, agents, and model serving.
  • Drive upgrades, migrations, integrations, and security remediations, prioritizing enhancements based on risk, customer feedback, and adoption.
  • Own monitoring, incident response, and root-cause analysis, and optimize utilization through compute policies, budgets, tagging, and chargeback or showback.
