About The Position

Nirvana is hiring a Senior Platform Engineer to own and evolve the foundation used by its product engineering teams. The role treats the platform as a product, with engineers as its customers, and focuses on helping teams work faster and ship more safely and confidently. Success is measured through reliability, cycle time, mean time to recovery (MTTR), and defect rate. The engineer will inherit a stack that includes managed AWS, Terraform, GitHub Actions, Datadog, and multi-account EKS, then develop the platform roadmap and address strategic questions around reliability and observability, test infrastructure and emerging agentic-AI tooling, platform costs, and production safety across teams. The position reports to the Director of Engineering and works daily with engineering tech leads. It includes first-response responsibility for platform and infrastructure issues escalated by product teams, with escalation paths to the Director of Engineering and the part-time DevOps tech lead. The role contributes to infrastructure-side SOC 2 and HIPAA controls but is not the owner of those programs. Nirvana builds machine-learning- and AI-powered benefit verification tools for healthcare providers, with the goal of making healthcare coverage and costs more transparent and reducing financial anxiety for patients and providers.

Requirements

At least 6 years of platform, SRE, infrastructure, or DevOps engineering experience, including at least 2 years at a senior level.
Deep AWS experience, production EKS experience, daily use of Terraform, and experience with multi-account architectures.
Experience building or substantially evolving an observability stack, with perspectives beyond adding dashboards.
Strong CI/CD instincts.
Comfort reading Python and TypeScript/Next.js and contributing to tooling around them.
Ability to write down opinions, disagree constructively, and communicate candidly.

Nice To Haves

Datadog experience is preferred.
Grafana stack or OpenTelemetry experience is a plus.
Experience with test environment management, test harness design, or modern AI-assisted testing tools.
Experience in regulated environments such as HIPAA, SOC 2, or PCI, and sound instincts for PHI handling; this is a strong signal but not required.
GitHub Actions experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

Define and improve service-level objectives, error budgets, and the observability practice so production systems are legible to the engineers operating them.
Own the test infrastructure platform, including test harnesses, environments, CI gates, and tooling; evaluate and integrate emerging agentic test tooling.
Improve developer experience across infrastructure, including environments, deployments, debugging, and day-to-day tooling; shape the experience where a managed vendor performs implementation.
Own platform spending across the stack, partner with the managed infrastructure vendor, and drive platform migrations to completion.
Maintain and evolve infrastructure-side SOC 2 and HIPAA controls, including logging, access, encryption, and PHI-handling patterns.
Provide first response for platform and infrastructure issues escalated from product teams, using the named escalation paths to the Director of Engineering and part-time DevOps tech lead.
Own the platform roadmap and make decisions that improve engineering-team effectiveness, reliability, cycle time, MTTR, and defect rate.
