About The Position

This role takes ownership of the investigative, analytical, and mathematical evaluation of insurance risks. By assessing customer information and applying sound analytical judgment, the Underwriter determines whether a risk profile is acceptable for the organization. This role is critical in ensuring that coverage decisions align with Heartland’s risk appetite and strategic goals, supporting sustainable growth and customer satisfaction.

Requirements

  • Have more than 6 years of experience in the insurance industry.
  • Post-secondary education, CIP designation.
  • You have exemplary analytical skills and can make informed decisions.
  • You are a skilled communicator who can adapt your approach to your audience.
  • You can influence decisions and negotiate strategically.
  • You are an enthusiastic learner who thrives within a team or independently.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal.
  • You have proven decision-making and analytical skills, including the ability to determine how to grow business profitability through assessment and analysis of individual risks.

Responsibilities

  • Underwrite and negotiate high risk/complexity renewals, policy endorsements and new business.
  • Identify positive and negative trends in submissions being received and communicate findings to management.
  • Negotiate the terms and conditions of risk acceptance with brokers in writing, by telephone, electronic mail or in person.
  • Order inspections, or other underwriting information for use in the analysis of critical risk hazards and decision making.
  • Uses underwriting knowledge to make recommendations for rate structure/pricing changes and underwriting or claims improvement.
  • Develop and maintain strong stakeholder relationships through personal accountability and high-quality decision making.
  • Build your professional networks – both at Heartland and industry events.
  • Ensure corporate governance and regulatory compliance policies and procedures.
  • Participate in, or provide training and development initiatives.
  • Uses full knowledge of policy wordings to assist other staff and distributors with risk analysis, recommendation of missing coverage, and generation of additional product line sales.
  • Provides guidance and training to other staff where underwriting authorities require referral to higher levels to ensure compliance and minimize company exposure.
