About The Position

This position involves participating in an underwriting training and onboarding process, guided by senior underwriters and other team members. The role focuses on learning and performing underwriting and re-underwriting functions within a defined level of authority, which includes appraising and selecting risks for Goodville to insure. The Underwriter will review members' records to ensure continued acceptability and adequate rates. A key aspect of the role is developing interpersonal skills to help Agents understand and adhere to Goodville's underwriting philosophy and service standards. The position requires active embrace, support, and promotion of Goodville's culture and guiding principles of Love, Justice, and Integrity. The individual is expected to develop industry knowledge through insurance coursework and evolving product understanding. This role may involve mono-line or multi-line underwriting in Personal, Farm, or Commercial Lines.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required; or Associate degree and two years related experience required; or High school diploma or GED, and four years of related experience required; or High school diploma or GED, and successful completion of CPCU, CIC or PLCS designation required.
  • Working knowledge of spreadsheet, word processing, and email software required.
  • Occasional travel required.
  • Willingness to enroll in and complete the General Insurance program (INS 21, 22, 23) or related insurance program required.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, travel to all organization offices (including in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and South Dakota) and travel to vendor work sites required.
  • Ability to work in an office environment with moderate noise level, remain in a stationary position and operate a computer a majority of the time required.
  • Ability to move throughout the office to access work materials and to move work materials weighing up to ten pounds daily required.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation required.

Responsibilities

  • Under the guidance of a mentor, develop the competency to analyze individual accounts, portfolio experience, and begin to apply product knowledge and acquired skills to perform underwriting tasks.
  • Review change requests, evaluate audits, inspections, and renewal records to verify continued acceptability, rate adequacy, and possible coverage modification within level of authority.
  • Review Policyholder files and records to verify original and continued acceptability and ensure adequate rates.
  • Review risk and claim reports to determine appropriate actions, including modifying risks or terminating coverage in accordance with level of authority.
  • Correspond, develop, and maintain working relationships with Agents, Marketing team and other departments.
  • Travel with Field Marketing Representatives to learn to establish rapport with agents and develop knowledge of Goodville’s territories and culture.
  • Under the guidance of a mentor, develop aptitude for acting as a resource and communicate with Agents on a regular basis to answer questions and discuss risks.
  • Communicate with senior underwriters and Marketing team regarding Agent issues or concerns.
  • Advise manager, supervisor or Senior Underwriter of issues or concerns.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
