About The Position

We are seeking a Senior Packaging Engineer to lead the design, development, and validation of packaging systems, with additional responsibility for ensuring the operational excellence of our packaging test lab. This role is primarily focused on advanced packaging engineering and will also serve as a key steward of lab capabilities, ensuring compliance, reliability, and audit readiness. The ideal candidate brings deep technical expertise in packaging engineering, along with hands-on experience managing or supporting packaging test lab operations, including equipment qualification, preventative maintenance, and test method integrity. In addition, this individual will play a key role in elevating organizational capability by facilitating training and knowledge transfer to the broader engineering team on packaging test methodologies, best practices, and emerging standards. Facilitates training and upskilling of engineering team members on packaging testing methods, standards, and best practices to ensure consistent and robust execution across programs. Develops and maintains training materials, standard work, and documentation related to packaging test methods and lab procedures. Acts as a subject matter expert (SME) for packaging testing, providing guidance on test selection, execution, and interpretation of results. Drives continuous improvement in testing practices by incorporating industry standards (ISTA, ASTM, ISO) and emerging methodologies. Ensures knowledge transfer across the team to strengthen bench capability and reduce reliance on single-point expertise within lab operations.

Requirements

  • Minimum 5+ years of packaging engineering experience within a regulated industry (medical device, pharmaceutical, healthcare, or consumer products).
  • Experience with packaging design, development, verification, validation, and commercialization.
  • Working knowledge of packaging test methods and standards including ISTA, ASTM, ISO 11607, and related industry standards.
  • Experience with process validation, equipment qualification, and change management activities.
  • Strong technical writing and documentation skills.
  • Experience leading cross-functional teams and managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Proficiency with statistical analysis and problem-solving methodologies.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree (M.S. Engineering, Packaging Engineering, or related field).
  • Medical device packaging experience.
  • Experience managing or supporting packaging test laboratory operations.
  • Knowledge of sterilization methods and sterile barrier systems.
  • Six Sigma Green Belt, Black Belt, or equivalent continuous improvement certification.
  • Experience with CAPA, NCR, risk management, and regulatory compliance activities.
  • Experience training and mentoring engineers and technicians.
  • Familiarity with packaging CAD software and statistical software tools (Minitab, JMP, etc.).
  • PMP certification or demonstrated project management experience.
  • Experience supporting FDA, ISO, and internal quality audits.

Responsibilities

  • Direct individuals to develop Packaging Design Engineering Supply Chain project plans and key milestones that produce deliverables aligned with customer’s operational needs and requirements.
  • Monitors, under general supervision, capital and expense forecasts for assigned engineering projects and ensures outputs adhere to quality, safety, and regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Confers with supervisors on process validations relative to new and transferred processes for subsequent operational integration and supply chain implementation.
  • Assists in the supervision of engineering technicians by supporting and enforcing site-specific safety and industrial hygiene requirements.
  • Ensure that all subordinates follow all company guidelines related to health, safety, and environmental practices and that all resources needed to do so are available and in good condition.
  • Assesses front-line measures to ensure personal and company compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Coaches more junior colleagues in techniques, processes, and responsibilities.
  • Understands and applies Johnson & Johnson’s Credo and Leadership Imperatives in day-to-day interactions with team.
