About The Position

The Senior Mechanical Piping Designer will collaborate with other designers, engineers, and disciplines in the development of process and site design. This role involves producing complex 3D designs and models of sites, facilities, pipelines, supports, foundations, and other required elements of energy infrastructure systems. The designer will read, interpret, and apply engineering terminology and symbols. They will work with the D&D Coordinator to develop and recommend updates to design and drafting standards and procedures, striving for continuous improvement. This position also includes training, coaching, and mentoring other Mechanical Designers, researching external training needs, and ensuring appropriate staff assignment for mechanical projects. The Senior Mechanical Piping Designer will provide leadership to design and drafting staff, potentially supervise other Mechanical Designers or Drafters, and review their work for accuracy and adherence to standards. They will also review work from clients, consultants, or vendors, and ensure the company stays current with the latest industry technology and tools, recommending updates as applicable. Under direction, they may coordinate with clients to resolve project questions and work with the D&D Coordinator and HR Coordinator on hiring and performance reviews. Input on new project proposals and estimates, review of design changes, and reporting of project or personnel issues are also key aspects. The role involves assisting engineering and project management with research, vendor contact, and other support functions. The ability to perform all responsibilities of a Mechanical Designer II is required, along with traveling to field project locations for sketches, dimensions, and as-built assemblies. Effective communication, providing status updates, and keeping drawing lists and tasks up-to-date are essential, as is striving to complete tasks on time and within budget.

Requirements

  • Demonstrate the ability to perform all key qualifications of a Mechanical Designer II
  • Expert skills using AutoCAD and Autodesk family of products for 3D modeling and drafting.
  • Expert skills using CADWorx family of products (including Plant, P&ID, Spec Editor, and Isogen).
  • Expert knowledge in the field of energy infrastructure design.
  • Expert knowledge in plant layout, piping, and support and hanger design
  • Expert knowledge in pipe, valves and fittings and corresponding material and dimensional specifications.
  • Ability to make decisions and find alternative solutions to problems.
  • Ability to provide clear & concise direction to assigned staff.
  • Ability to communicate within a dynamic design team, often with contacts external to home office location.
  • Ability to solve complex problems and strive for innovative approaches to the design maturity process.
  • Ability to establish & maintain standards, processes & systems within a design team.
  • Capacity to conduct and participate in meetings with senior management.
  • Five or more years of experience developing complex 2D and 3D designs, design processes and inspiring innovative approaches.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with other 3D software such as Revit is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the Drafting & Design (D&D) Coordinator to research and coordinate external training as needed for the Mechanical Design team.
  • Work with the D&D Coordinator to ensure that each mechanical project is assigned to appropriate staff.
  • Provide leadership to design and drafting staff on assigned projects.
  • May supervise other Mechanical Designers or Drafters.
  • Reviewing the work of other Mechanical Designers and/or Drafters for accuracy and adherence to company, client and industry standards.
  • Review work in progress or deliverables received from clients, outside consultants or vendors.
  • Work with the D&D Coordinator to ensure that the company is current on the latest industry technology and using the best tools available for each application. Make recommendations for updates or upgrades as applicable.
  • Under direction from the Project Manager or Lead Engineers, may be requested to communicate and/or coordinate with clients to resolve project questions such design requirements and standards.
  • Work with the D&D Coordinator and Human Resources Coordinator to hire new design talent and assist with performance reviews with existing employees.
  • Provide input on new project proposals and estimates as requested.
  • Review changes to design and scope, requests for extra work and any factors which may impact manpower requirements within the Mechanical Design Team.
  • Report escalation of any project or personnel issues to the Principals or Human Resources as necessary.
  • Prepare documents or reports as requested by the Principals or Project Management team.
  • Assist engineering and project management as needed with researching product specifications, contacting vendors, and/or other support functions.
  • Has the ability to perform all responsibilities identified in the Designer II job description.
  • Travel to field project locations with other designers or engineers to make field sketches, take dimensions, as-built assemblies, etc.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Communicate effectively and provide regular status updates. Keep drawing lists and Teams tasks up to date.
  • Strive continually to complete all assigned tasks on time & within allocated budget.
