About The Position

This role provides technical assistance and guidance for the due diligence, design, development, construction, testing, and inspection of mechanical systems on infrastructure, building, and construction projects in the public and private sectors. The work includes researching, designing, planning, installing, operating, maintaining, and integrating automatic temperature control, air distribution, hydronic, and plumbing systems and equipment. The engineer documents installation, construction, and operating specifications and ensures work meets or exceeds industry standards for design, safety, and functionality. The engineer collects and analyzes project-site and design information; conducts engineering research and inspections; develops plans, specifications, and cost estimates; and coordinates with owners, clients, other disciplines, and subcontractors. The position contributes to multiple concurrent projects, supports project development and construction, prepares technical reports and presentations, maintains quality-control procedures, and provides guidance and training to entry-level engineers. It also involves preparing and implementing site Health and Safety Plans, complying with regulatory and recordkeeping requirements, and maintaining current knowledge of mechanical engineering practices. Occasional travel and schedules that may extend beyond a typical workweek may be required based on project needs.

  • 5 to 7 years of relevant post-education experience in engineering and prior mechanical design experience.
  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Proficient knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, practices, processes, design/build, and their application to project work.
  • Experience with building and infrastructure planning, design, and construction management, including active involvement in rehabilitation and new-design projects.
  • Working knowledge of processes and concepts for reducing or eliminating the use or generation of hazardous substances and greenhouse gases.
  • Working knowledge of relevant mechanical systems and construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and recordkeeping requirements.
  • Ability to perform technical computations and calculations using engineering principles, interpret plans and specifications, and compare facts with applicable regulations.
  • Project management experience with small- to mid-level projects, including tracking project hours and expenses.
  • Ability to plan and conduct inspections and investigations concerning construction and design of facilities, structures, and systems, applying applicable regulations and policies.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to express ideas professionally to engineering and non-engineering audiences.
  • Self-leadership, attention to detail, multitasking, and prioritization skills in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work independently and provide guidance and leadership to junior team or project members while adhering strictly to QA/QC.
  • Proficiency in technical writing, office automation, discipline-specific design software (such as AutoCAD and CAM), technology, mathematical principles, predictive models, spreadsheets, and tools.
  • Critical-thinking and problem-solving skills to draw conclusions from testing results, data collation, load calculations, and statistical analysis and identify effective, economical, and logical solutions.
  • Ability to direct subcontractors and others in the field assertively to complete tasks safely and efficiently.
  • Proven commitment to workplace safety and ability to comply with WSP health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules suited to project-specific requirements, which may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.

  • Essential Professional Licensure/Certification.
  • Experience managing small- to mid-size projects.
  • 40-Hour OSHA Health & Safety Training (HAZWOPER) (29 CFR 1910.120).
  • Basic First Aid and Adult CPR training.

Responsibilities

  • Determine methods for collecting, compiling, and analyzing site, survey, blueprint, schematic, technical drawing, and other project data.
  • Perform mechanical engineering work, research, and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, equipment, buildings, infrastructure, and mechanical systems for compliance with applicable requirements and permits.
  • Develop construction and installation plans, specifications, cost estimates, safety and phasing plans, and infrastructure layout plans in coordination with owners, clients, other disciplines, and sub-consultants.
  • Apply technology, modeling, concept development, design requirements, load calculations, and operating strategies to support proper installation and operation of mechanical systems.
  • Verify site characteristics and provide technical assistance on automatic temperature control, air distribution, hydronic, and plumbing systems.
  • Execute work on multiple concurrent projects individually and as part of cross-functional teams; assist with equipment layouts and cost and material, equipment, and labor quantity calculations.
  • Ensure project work conforms to specifications, permit applications, schematics, compliance documentation, and regulatory and technical analysis memos.
  • Prepare data visualizations and project materials, including tables, charts, reports, sketches, calculations, technical drawings, spreadsheets, and illustrations.
  • Maintain quality-control standards and procedures for accurate measurements, statistical analysis, and reporting.
