Senior Mechanical CAD Designer – Aircraft Integration

MAGEE TECHNOLOGIES LLC (MTech)•Patuxent River, MD
•$44 - $60

About The Position

The Senior Mechanical CAD Designer supports the design, development, and integration of aircraft modifications and prototype systems through advanced 3D mechanical modeling and detailed engineering drawing development. Working independently, the designer creates and modifies complex components, assemblies, structural attachments, brackets, and equipment mounting solutions using industry-standard CAD software. The role applies mechanical design principles, GD&T, and aircraft integration knowledge to turn engineering requirements into accurate, manufacturable designs and supports installation, structural analysis, and configuration management activities. The position develops and maintains consistent 3D models, 2D drawings, model-based dimensions, and annotations; interprets wiring diagrams and technical data to create mechanical cable routing and installation designs; and manages engineering data in PLM systems. It also supports fit checks, installation evaluations, technical reviews, structural substantiation, and the technical development of junior personnel. The role requires at least nine years of relevant experience, advanced proficiency in Creo, SolidWorks, or CATIA, knowledge of ASME Y14.x standards and GD&T, aircraft modification experience, PLM expertise, U.S. citizenship, and eligibility to obtain and maintain a Secret clearance. An interim Secret clearance is required before work begins.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of nine years of experience performing technical design, engineering documentation, and related Engineering Technician V functions.
  • Advanced proficiency in PTC Creo, SolidWorks, or CATIA, including independent development of complex 3D mechanical parts, assemblies, structural attachments, brackets, equipment mounting hardware, and detailed 2D engineering drawings.
  • Thorough working knowledge of applicable ASME Y14.x standards, including Y14.5, Y14.100, and Y14.24, with demonstrated proficiency applying GD&T, functional datum structures, dimensional tolerances, and drawing review practices.
  • Experience supporting aircraft modifications, mission systems, sensors, or prototype equipment through design and documentation of mechanical components, structural attachments, installation hardware, cable supports, or access panels.
  • Ability to maintain consistency among 3D models, 2D drawings, model-based dimensions, and annotations while producing complete, accurate, releasable engineering documentation.
  • Ability to interpret wiring diagrams and harness schematics and develop 2D cable installation and routing drawings, including mechanical supports, clearances, penetrations, strain relief, and separation requirements; working awareness of 3D routing concepts.
  • Proficiency with PTC Windchill or ENOVIA for CAD data management, engineering revisions, configuration baselines, and lifecycle workflows; familiarity with DoD technical repositories such as AVPLM, IETMS, or platform-specific systems.
  • Working knowledge of aircraft structural load paths, mechanical fastener considerations, and installation constraints, with demonstrated ability to independently complete complex technical assignments and support engineering reviews.
  • U.S. citizenship and eligibility to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance; at least an interim Secret clearance is required before beginning work.

Nice To Haves

  • Department of Defense experience.
  • Experience with advanced assembly and sheet metal modeling, 3D cable or harness routing, electromechanical integration, rack and equipment mounting, connector bulkhead panels, and cable support hardware.
  • Familiarity with MIL/NAS/MS hardware specifications and NAVAIR practices.
  • Experience supporting aircraft fit checks, installation trials, drawing standardization, technical peer reviews, and mentoring junior designers or technicians.

Responsibilities

  • Independently create and modify complex 3D CAD models of mechanical components, assemblies, brackets, structural attachments, equipment mounts, and aircraft installation hardware using Creo, SolidWorks, or CATIA.
  • Produce detailed 2D engineering drawings from 3D models, including dimensions, tolerances, material specifications, parts lists, assembly details, and manufacturing and installation requirements.
  • Develop mechanical design solutions for aircraft modifications and prototype installations, accounting for structural interfaces, equipment clearances, accessibility, manufacturability, and installation constraints.
  • Apply ASME Y14.x drawing standards and GD&T to produce accurate, functional, releasable engineering documentation.
  • Collaborate with engineers, structural analysts, manufacturing personnel, and installation teams to resolve design challenges, verify fit and clearance, and incorporate engineering changes into configuration-managed CAD models and drawings.
  • Plan and perform complex mechanical design assignments independently within established engineering guidance, translating technical requirements and aircraft modification concepts into complete 3D models and releasable drawings.
  • Maintain consistency among 3D models, 2D drawings, model-based dimensions, and annotations; incorporate engineering redlines and maintain revision histories.
  • Interpret aircraft wiring diagrams and harness schematics to develop mechanical cable-routing solutions and 2D installation drawings, including supports, clips, straps, penetrations, grommets, strain relief, and separation from adjacent systems.
  • Research and interpret aircraft technical data, OEM documentation, and approved naval aviation repositories to establish design baselines and support aircraft modification modeling.
  • Manage CAD models, drawings, and supporting documentation in designated PLM systems, including check-in/check-out, revisions, configuration baselines, lifecycle status, and engineering change documentation.
  • Develop mechanical geometry, fastener patterns, and structural attachment details to support engineering review and structural substantiation, considering load paths, shear, tension, bearing, edge distance, pitch, and gage.
  • Support aircraft fit checks, installation evaluations, and technical reviews by comparing modeled designs with physical aircraft constraints, documenting discrepancies, incorporating installation feedback, and providing technical guidance and drawing reviews to junior personnel.
