About The Position

The Senior Manager, Development - California is a fully remote position based in California, with a preference for candidates in the San Francisco Bay Area. This person will join a growing team of experienced Washington, D.C.-based development professionals to cultivate relationships and secure resources to advance and sustain the organization’s work in California. They will use fundraising and relationship-management skills to raise the organization’s profile and grow support primarily from high-net-worth individuals and select foundations in California, while also supporting corporate relationships in the region. The Partnership has recently expanded with new programming in California, creating an opportunity to help grow government capacity in the state and engage a wide range of California-based stakeholders and funders. The Senior Manager will play a central role in capitalizing on this momentum, building on growing interest among California funders and connecting them to the Partnership’s work in the state. The role will begin with a qualified portfolio of approximately 40 California individual and foundation funders and prospects, providing an immediate foundation for continued cultivation, solicitation and stewardship. The Senior Manager will be capable of effectively managing a diverse portfolio of funders and prospects, and will have experience cultivating and soliciting individual donors, ideally including gifts of $25,000 or more. Experience with foundation fundraising is preferred but not required. They will work in close coordination with other Partnership staff and effectively engage, support and deploy the organization’s CEO, senior executives and board members in pursuit of funding opportunities. The Senior Manager will be passionate about applying their skills to the Partnership’s mission and will be comfortable working independently, proactively and energetically while collaborating with others to advance the organization’s mission. They will own the day-to-day execution of this work while partnering closely with their supervisor on strategy, prospect planning and major solicitations.

Requirements

  • A minimum of seven years progressively responsible fundraising, business development or sales experience.
  • Two years’ experience cultivating, soliciting and stewarding individual donors of $10,000 or more, preferably in a nonprofit environment.
  • Prior experience with prospect research.
  • Familiarity with and commitment to using donor relationship management systems; knowledge of Salesforce is preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree required, or equivalent professional work or military experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with successfully securing foundation grants of $50,000 or more preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute strategies to secure support from a portfolio of 40+ active funders and prospects in California, directly soliciting individuals and foundations while partnering with the President and CEO, senior executives or board members on high-level solicitations.
  • Use various donor research and relationship-building methods to identify and cultivate a portfolio of new individual and foundation prospects for the Partnership’s programs and initiatives in California.
  • Work with other Development team members to steward California-based donors and prospects and design and execute cultivation events to raise the Partnership’s profile in the region.
  • Provide input into revenue targets and strategies to support the Partnership for programs and initiatives in California.
  • Draft concept papers, grant proposals and grant reports, as required.
  • Maintain contact and prospect information in Salesforce and ensure meeting notes and other information are appropriately captured in the system.
  • Work directly with other members of the Development team and adhere to standard procedures to ensure strong communication, collaboration and recordkeeping.
  • Seek out training opportunities that support professional growth and align with an annual performance management plan.
